The Substitute Wife (1925 Film)
''The Substitute Wife'' is a 1925 American silent drama film written by Katherine Smith and directed by Wilfred Noy. Plot A man, suddenly gone blind, mistakes another woman for his wife. When nurse ''Hilda Nevers'' returns from the Orient, she is left penniless because her father has died. She goes to work at a hospital where ''Dr. Kitchell'' is impressed by her voice, which is almost identical to that of his lover, ''Evelyn Wentworth''. ''Evelyn'' is engaged to ''Lawrence Sinton'', but only for his money. On their wedding night, ''Sinton'' is blinded when a burglar hits him on the head. ''Hilda'' is substituted for ''Evelyn'', who is then free to continue her affair with the doctor. A family friend finally exposes the situation, but by then, ''Hilda'' and ''Sinton'' have fallen in love. ''Sinton'' has an operation that restores his sight, and he and ''Hilda'' are united. Wilfred Noy (born Wilfred Noy Blumberg, 24 December 1883 – 29 March 1948) was an English film director, actor, screenwriter and producer of the silent era. Noy was the maternal uncle of Leslie Howard.Eforgan, Estel. Leslie Howard: The Lost Actor. London: Vallentine Mitchell, 2010. . He directed more than 80 films between 1910 and 1936. He also appeared in 18 films between 1924 and 1939. In 1925 he went to the United States to make ''The Lost Chord'', a remake of one of his earlier British hits. The National Audiovisual Conservation Center, also known as the Packard Campus for Audio-Visual Conservation, is the Library of Congress's audiovisual archive located inside Mount Pony in Culpeper, Virginia. Mario Majeroni
Mario Majeroni (1870–1931) was an Italian-born American playwright and stage and film actor. Biography Majeroni came to the United States in 1906 and started acting on Broadway that year. Prior to coming to the United States he had lived and worked in Australia, where his parents had a successful dramatic company noted for one of the earliest stage adaptations of ''For the Term of His Natural Life''. In 1914 he started appearing in silent films after years of stage work. He never left the stage and alternated between Broadway and motion pictures. He appeared in films with many silent stars of the day and made his last film in 1927 appearing with Chester Conklin in Paramount's ''Rubber Heels''. Majeroni never appeared in sound films and preferred Broadway plays to talkies. He was appearing in a play when he died in New York in November 1931.
