''The Spy Ring'' is a 1938 American adventure film directed by Joseph H. Lewis and written by George Waggner. The film stars William Hall, Jane Wyman, Esther Ralston, Robert Warwick, Leon Ames and Ben Alexander. The film was released on January 8, 1938, by Universal Pictures. Plot Two army officers are working on an invention that will guarantee accuracy on artillery and large weapons, but there is a gang of spies that is after the device, when one of the officers is murdered, the other one swears to catch the spies that did it. Paul Sutton (May 14, 1910 – January 31, 1970) was an American radio writer and actor who also acted in film. Biography He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is perhaps best known as one of the actors who portrayed Sergeant William Preston on the radio serial ''Challenge of the Yukon''. He has been credited with creating ''Challenge of the Yukon'' and writing episodes of ''The Green Hornet''. He collaborated on ''The Life of Mary Sothern'', a 13-week serial on WMCA and WLW in 1938. As of July 26, 1938, he was at WXYZ in Detroit. In film, he appeared in westerns and low budget B-movies during the 1930s and 1940s, sometimes in uncredited roles. Harry Woods (actor)
Harry Lewis Woods (May 5, 1889 – December 28, 1968) was an American film actor. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Woods was a millinery salesman prior to becoming an actor. He appeared in nearly 250 films between 1923 and 1958. During his 35-year film career he acquired a reputation as a screen villain ''par excellence''; his imposing size, powerful build, piercing eyes and snarling voice typed him as a bad guy to be reckoned with. He seldom played ordinary henchmen, usually cast as both the brains (the banker or saloon owner who secretly runs the bandit gang terrorizing the area) and the brawn behind the local villainy. He was well respected by his peers. Another prime screen villain, Roy Barcroft, once said of him, "Everything I know about being a bad guy I learned from Harry Woods." John Joseph Francis Mulhall (October 7, 1887 – June 1, 1979) was an American film actor beginning in the silent film era who successfully transitioned to sound films, appearing in over 430 films in a career spanning 50 years. Early years Mulhall was born in Wappingers Falls, New York. He was one of six children born to an Irish father and a Scottish mother. He began helping with carnival acts when he was 14 years old.
