The Spectacles is a mixed-use suburb located in the City of Kwinana within the Perth Metropolitan Region, the state capital of Western Australia. It comprises almost entirely a wetland reserve, The Spectacles Wetlands, surrounded by degraded native bushland. A small number of residential housing properties lie in the south-eastern corner of the suburb. The Spectacles wetland area is considered to be the most valuable asset of Kwinana's natural environment, covering 3.7 square kilometres. It is named The Spectacles because it comprises two lakes connected by a drain, giving it the appearance of a pair of spectacles from an aerial perspective. One third of The Spectacles is owned by Alcoa and was originally intended for residue disposal. The Spectacles Wetlands (Noongar: Djinining) is a wetland located in the eponymous suburb, south of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. It is part of Beeliar Regional Park. It consists of two distinct swamps, the Large Eye Swamp in the north and the Small Eye Swamp in the south. The wetland is also on the City of Kwinana heritage list. History The area of the Beeliar Regional Park, with its freshwater lakes, was an important camping area and source of food for the Beeliar clan of the Whadjuk people from the Noongar nation. A major trade route connecting the Swan and Murray River passed through the wetlands of what is now Beeliar Regional Park. European records of The Spectacles Wetlands date back to 1841, when the area was first surveyed by Thomas Watson. "The Spectacles" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, published in 1844. It is one of Poe's comedy tales. Plot summary The narrator, 22-year-old Napoleon Buonaparte Froissart, changes his last name to "Simpson" as a requirement to inherit a large sum from a distant cousin, Adolphus Simpson. At the opera he sees a beautiful woman in the audience and falls in love instantly. He describes her beauty at length, despite not being able to see her well; he requires spectacles but, in his vanity, "resolutely refused to employ them". His companion Talbot identifies the woman as Madame Eugenie Lalande, a wealthy widow, and promises to introduce the two. He courts her and proposes marriage; she makes him promise that, on their wedding night, he will wear his spectacles. When he puts on the spectacles, he sees that she is a toothless old woman.
