The Socialist (UK Newspaper)
''The Socialist'' is the weekly paper of the Socialist Party (England and Wales), Socialist Party. Founded in 1964 under the name ''Militant'', it styled itself as the "Marxist voice of Labour and Youth" and played an important role in bringing together a strong left-wing grouping within the British Labour Party UK, Labour Party, so much so that the group came to be known as the Militant tendency after the newspaper they sold and read. In 1997, Militant Labour (successor to the Militant tendency) changed its name to the Socialist Party, and the Militant newspaper was renamed the Socialist the same year. It is edited and written by the members and supporters of the political party publishing it. Sold by its members, it is a non-profit paper, carrying news and reports from around the country and from overseas. The newspaper first appeared intermittently in the early 1990s following the expulsion of members of Militant tendency from the Labour Party. It became defunct around 2020-2021 as Socialist Action was wound down after allegations of rape against a number of leading members. ''The Socialist'' was the newspaper of the Socialist Labour Party (UK, 1903), Socialist Labour Party (SLP), a De Leonist organisation in United Kingdom, Britain founded in 1903. Publication history Establishment ''The Socialist'' was set up by James Connolly in 1901. He was its first editor, after which George Yates (socialist), George Yates took over. During Yates' editorship, it was the focus of the De Leonists within the Social Democratic Federation (SDF). After writing an article critical of the SDF Executive in 1903, Yates was expelled, and the supporters of ''The Socialist'' founded the SLP. In 1904, Yates resigned; by the early 1910s, it was edited by John William Muir; John Smith Clarke was editor for a time, while this role was later taken on by Arthur MacManus, who from 1919 to 1920 was joint editor with Tom Bell (politician), Tom Bell. Mount Hermon ( ar, جبل الشيخ or جبل حرمون / ALA-LC: ''Jabal al-Shaykh'' ("Mountain of the Sheikh") or ''Jabal Haramun''; he, הַר חֶרְמוֹן, ''Har Hermon'') is a mountain cluster constituting the southern end of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range. Its summit straddles the border between Syria and Lebanon and, at above sea level, is the highest point in Syria. On the top, in the United Nations buffer zone between Syrian and Israeli-occupied territories, is the highest permanently manned UN position in the world, known as "Hermon Hotel", located at 2814 metres altitude. The southern slopes of Mount Hermon extend to the Israeli-occupied portion of the Golan Heights, where the Mount Hermon ski resort is located with a top elevation of 2,040 metres (6,690 ft). The World Socialist Party of the United States (WSPUS) is a socialist political organization that was established in Detroit, Michigan as the Socialist Party of the United States in 1916 and which operated as the Socialist Educational Society in the 1920s before being renamed the Workers' Socialist Party. The organization reemerged in the 1990s and exists today as the American companion party of the World Socialist Movement. ''The Socialist'' newspaper was first published on 2 April 1906 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, the mouthpiece of the Victorian Socialist Party, a Marxist political party in Australia. The party was formed in 1906, but considered a party in name only by 1932.
