''The Socialist'' was the official publication of Socialist Action, formerly the Australian affiliate of the International Socialist Alternative (ISA). It became defunct around 2020-2021 as Socialist Action was wound down after allegations of rape against a number of leading members. History and overview Socialist Action was formally known as The Militant and published a newspaper by the same name. After The Militant changed its name to the Socialist Party, it published a newspaper called ''The Voice'', before publishing ''The Socialist'' as an eight-page broadsheet. In May 2012, the format of ''The Socialist'' was changed to a magazine and it was published in that format until 2020. It has no relation to the publication formally produced by the Victorian Socialist Party during the early 20th century. Socialist Action, known until October 2019 as the Socialist Party, was a Trotskyist political party in Australia. It published a monthly magazine called ''The Socialist'' which contained a socialist perspective on news and current issues. History The Socialist Party (Australia) traced its origins to the British Trotyskyist Militant group (now International Socialist Alternative) which organized within the UK Labour Party. It began in 1985 as a small faction within the Australian Labor Party (ALP), when members who had lived in Britain and become members of British Militant returned to Australia to help build an Australian section of the organisation. The group was originally known as Militant. At that time the ALP was seen by Militant as having "maintained its internal democracy and its active working class membership base", and so they participated politically within that party. International Socialist Alternative
International Socialist Alternative is an international association of Trotskyist political parties. The group was founded in 1974 as the Committee for a Workers' International, by supporters of Militant from 12 countries. In August 2019, a faction left and formed a separate organisation called the "refounded CWI". After initially calling themselves the "CWI Majority", the remaining group relaunched under the name International Socialist Alternative in February 2020. The ISA has groups in 30 countries. Victorian Socialist Party
The Victorian Socialist Party (VSP) was a socialist political party in the Australian state of Victoria during the early 20th century. Most VSP members were also members of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), or later became members. A faction of the VSP hoped to " bore from within" and win the ALP for socialism. Members who were later prominent included John Curtin (Prime Minister of Australia 1941–45), Frank Anstey (a federal Labor MP 1910–34), Maurice Blackburn (a federal MP 1934–43), Don Cameron (a Senator 1938–1962), Fred Katz (a Senator 1947–1951), and John Cain (three times Premier of Victoria).
