The Slim Princess (1915 Film)
''The Slim Princess'' is a 1915 American silent comedy film directed by E. H. Calvert and starring Francis X. Bushman, Ruth Stonehouse and Wallace Beery. (This is believed to have been Beery's first full-length feature film.) The movie was written by Edward T. Lowe, Jr. from a story by George Ade and play by Henry Blossom, and was subsequently remade into a 1920 film starring Mabel Normand. The farcical plot involves a princess of a fictional country, loosely based upon Turkey, in which obese women are prized and the normal-sized protagonist is widely regarded as being too slender. Plot As described in a film magazine, Alexander Pike, longing for new fields to conquer and willing to give a federal grand jury some time to forget him, takes a trip to Morovenia, where the ruling governor is desperate because Kalora, his oldest daughter, refuses to get fat enough to conform to the Turkish ideal of beauty and so be safely married off. Henry Blossom
Henry Martyn Blossom (May 10, 1866 – March 23, 1919) was an American playwright and lyricist. Biography Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he teamed with Victor Herbert on several popular operettas. His first Broadway musical project was ''The Yankee Consul'' (1904) for composer Alfred G. Robyn, after which he primarily wrote for Herbert, including ''Mlle. Modiste'' (1905), ''The Red Mill'' (1906), ''Baron Trenck'' (1911), '' The Only Girl'' (1914), ''The Princess Pat'' (1915), '' Eileen'' (1917), and '' Kiss Me Again'' (film version of ''Mlle. Modiste'', 1931). He also wrote "When Uncle Sam is Ruler of the Sea" with Victor Herbert in 1916, "It's Not the Uniform That Makes the Man" with A. Baldwin Sloane in 1917 and "I Want to Go Back to the War" with Percival Knight (music was by Raymond Hubbell) in 1919. Blossom was also involved with several shows that failed to reach Broadway. Harry Dunkinson
Harry Dunkinson (December 16, 1876 – March 14, 1936) was an American film and stage actor. He appeared in more than 140 films between 1912 and 1935. He was born in New York City and died in California. Dunkinson began acting on stage when he was nine years old. His work in films began with Essanay. He worked primarily in silent films, with his roles diminishing after sound films were introduced. Fandango is a lively partner dance originating from Portugal and Spain, usually in triple meter, traditionally accompanied by guitars, castanets, or hand-clapping. Fandango can both be sung and danced. Sung fandango is usually bipartite: it has an instrumental introduction followed by "variaciones". Sung fandango usually follows the structure of "cante" that consist of four or five octosyllabic verses (coplas) or musical phrases (tercios). Occasionally, the first copla is repeated. The meter of fandango is similar to that of the bolero and seguidilla. It was originally notated in time, of slow tempo, mostly in the minor, with a trio in the major; sometimes, however, the whole was in a major key. Later it took the 3-4 tempo, and the characteristic Spanish rhythm.
