The Slave Market (Boulanger Painting)
''The Slave Market'' is a painting first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1886 by the French artist Gustave Boulanger, who specialized in classical and Orientalist genre scenes. Its title in the Salon catalogue was ''Un Maquignon d’esclaves à Rome'' (A Slave Dealer in Rome), but as early as 1888 it was called ''Vente d’esclaves'' (Sale of Slaves) in the French press, and in English it has become known as ''The Slave Market''. It is sometimes compared to or confused with various paintings of slave markets in the Arab world and the ancient world by Boulanger's friend and fellow painter Jean-Léon Gérôme. Description The painting depicts an Ancient Roman slave auction. It shows the marketing of seven young people, ranging in age from children to young adults, as slaves. Gustave Boulanger
Gustave Clarence Rodolphe Boulanger (25 April 1824 – 22 September 1888) was a French figurative painter and academic artist and teacher known for his Classical and Orientalist subjects. Education and career The Néo-Grecs and the Prix de Rome Boulanger was born in Paris in 1824. He never knew his father, and when his mother's death left him orphaned at the age of fourteen, he became the ward of his uncle, Constant Desbrosses, who in 1840 sent him to study first under the history painter Pierre-Jules Jollivet and then at the atelier of Paul Delaroche, where Boulanger met and befriended his fellow student Jean-Léon Gérôme. Boulanger and Gérome would become leading lights of the Néo-Grec movement in French art, which revisited the fascination of previous generations for the Classical world, but brought to its austere subject matter subversive touches of whimsy, sensuality, and eroticism. Burnous
A burnous ( ber, ⴰⴱⵔⵏⵓⵙ ), also burnoose, bournous or barnous, is a long cloak of coarse woollen fabric with a pointed hood, often white in colour, traditionally worn by Berber and other Maghrebi men. In the Maghreb, the colour of the burnous may be white, beige, or dark brown. There are rock engravings near Sigus that attest the existence of the burnous in the ancient times, it was also worn by the Numidians. Historically, the white burnous was worn during important events by men of high positions. Georges Lafenestre (5 May 1837, Orléans - 19 May 1919, Bourg-la-Reine) was a French poet, art critic and art historian. Biography His career was devoted to administering the fine arts, as a Conservator at the Louvre, and a member of the Institut de France, where he bequeathed a significant collection of photographs of Italian art to the Institut's museum. In 1866, he married Isabelle Bénédite, née Lisbonne (born 1840), the widow of businessman Samuel Bénédite (c.1826-1865); mother of Georges Bénédite and Léonce Bénédite, who followed their step-father into the fields of art history and curation.
