The Singing Outlaw
''The Singing Outlaw'' is a 1938 American "B" movie Western (genre), Western film directed by Joseph H. Lewis and starring Bob Baker (actor), Bob Baker as a singing cowboy. Production The film was the third that Lewis had directed, after ''Navy Spy'' (1937), which he co-directed with Crane Wilbur and ''Courage of the West''. This was the second of four films in which Fuzzy Knight played the comic sidekick to Universal Pictures, Universal's new singing cowboy, Bob Baker. Synopsis A singing outlaw named Cueball and a U.S. Marshal kill each other in a shoot-out. A bystander (Baker) decides to take over the Marshall's identity. To trap the local outlaw gang he pretends to be Cueball. He finds himself struggling to stop the cattle rustlers and win the love of the daughter of a rancher (Joan Barclay). Singing Cowboy
A singing cowboy was a subtype of the archetypal cowboy hero of early Western films. It references real-world campfire side ballads in the American frontier, the original cowboys sang of life on the trail with all the challenges, hardships, and dangers encountered while pushing cattle for miles up the trails and across the prairies. This continues with modern vaquero traditions and within the genre of Western music, and its related New Mexico, Red Dirt, Tejano, and Texas country music styles. A number of songs have been written and made famous by groups like the Sons of the Pioneers and Riders in the Sky and individual performers such as Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Tex Ritter, Bob Baker and other "singing cowboys". ''Courage of the West'' was a 1937 "B" movie directed by Joseph H. Lewis in which Bob Baker made his debut as a singing cowboy. Production The film was the first production that Joseph H. Lewis directed. 75 non-union cowboys were hired in Sonora to work on the movie. Lewis was told that the Screen Actors Guild did not have jurisdiction at this distance from Los Angeles, although its members would have to be paid the standard rates agreed with the Guild. Filming was completed in seven days. This movie, Baker's first, was thought to be his best. The others suffered from predictable plots and poor scripts. Lois January, the love interest in the film, said, "Bob Baker was too pretty! He was nice, but didn't get friendly. He didn't want me to sing a song in his picture. Trem Carr
Tremlet C. Carr (November 6, 1891– August 18, 1946) was an American film producer, closely associated with the low-budget filmmaking of Poverty Row. In 1931 he co-founded Monogram Pictures, which developed into one of the leading specialist producers of B pictures in Hollywood. In 1935, the company was merged into the newly created Republic Pictures, but a year later, Carr broke away and reestablished Monogram as an independent company. Following his death in 1946, Monogram changed its name to Allied Artists and began producing films made on higher budgets.
