The Shoe Museum
The Shoe Museum in Street, Somerset, England exhibited shoes dating from the Roman era to the present day. The museum closed on 27 September 2019. It showed the history of the Clark family and their company C. & J. Clark and its connection with the development of shoemaking in the town. The Clarks started making slippers, shoes and boots in the town in the 1820s and the company grew, introducing mechanised processes in the 1860s. Production continued until after 2000 when it was moved off-shore, using third party factories, predominantly located in Asia. In the 19th century, in line with the family’s Quaker values, the capital was also extended beyond the factory to benefit social initiatives in Street: a school was founded so that young men and women could combine working in the factory with continuing their education, a theatre was opened, a library was built, along with an open-air swimming pool, known as Greenbank, and town hall. Street, Somerset
Street is a large village and civil parish in Somerset, England, with a population of 11,805 in 2011. On a dry spot in the Somerset Levels, at the end of the Polden Hills, it is south-west of Glastonbury. There is evidence of Roman occupation. Much of the history of the village is dominated by Glastonbury Abbey, and a 12th-century causeway from Glastonbury built to transport local Blue Lias stone to it. The Society of Friends was established there by the mid-17th century. One Quaker family, the Clarks, started a business in sheepskin rugs, woollen slippers and, later, boots and shoes. This became C&J Clark which still has its headquarters in Street. In 1993, redundant factory buildings were converted to form Clarks Village, the first purpose-built factory outlet in the United Kingdom. Roman Britain
Roman Britain was the period in classical antiquity when large parts of the island of Great Britain were under occupation by the Roman Empire. The occupation lasted from AD 43 to AD 410. Strode Theatre
Strode Theatre is a mixed arts venue in Street, Somerset, England. It has a 1960s two-tiered 343 seat purpose-built main theatre and a versatile modern Studio space, with retractable seating for 64. It hosts a programme of live professional and amateur theatre productions, live folk, classical and rock/pop music; popular, European and art-house film; live broadcasts from major international venues, such as London's National Theatre and New York's Metropolitan Opera; and visual arts exhibitions. Strode Theatre is part of Strode College, but operates independently and is largely self-financing, while providing a rehearsal and performance arts facility, and a programme of events for students from the college. Clarks Village
Clarks Village is an outlet shopping village in Street, Somerset, England. It was established in 1993 on the site of old C&J Clark factory buildings. History In the 19th century Cyrus Clark started a business in sheepskin rugs, later joined by his brother James, who introduced the production of woollen slippers, and later, boots and shoes. However, shoes are no longer manufactured there. Clarks Village opened on 14 August 1993 and gained over two million visitors in its first year. It grew to include over 90 high street and designer retailers, as well as a number of coffee shops, restaurants and fast food chains. The site is owned and managed by Land Securities Group Plc. Each year the range of shops and brands available changes. Many family events take place during the year with activities and school holiday activities. Concealed Shoes
Concealed shoes hidden in the fabric of a building have been discovered in many European countries, as well as in other parts of the world, since at least the early modern period. Independent researcher Brian Hoggard has observed that the locations in which these shoes are typically found – in chimneys, under floors, above ceilings, around doors and windows, in the roof – suggest that some may have been concealed as magical charms to protect the occupants of the building against evil influences such as demons, ghosts and witches. Somerset is a county in the south west of England. It has a varied cultural tradition ranging from the Arthurian legends to The Wurzels, a band specialising in Scrumpy and Western music. Art, music, film and literature Traditional folk music, both song and dance, was important in Somerset's agrarian communities. Somerset songs were collected by Cecil Sharp and incorporated into a number of works including Holst's ''A Somerset Rhapsody''. Halsway Manor near Williton is an international centre for folk music.
