The Shiva Option
''The Shiva Option'', published by Baen Books, is the sequel to David Weber and Steve White's military science fiction novel '' In Death Ground''. Plot summary The Grand Alliance of Terrans, Orions, Gorm and Ophiuchi has suffered a catastrophic defeat at the hands of the Bugs during the Pesthouse Campaign. Many senior military commanders have been lost, along with the bulk of the Terran Federation pre-war fleet. The Bugs appear unstoppable and fight their way toward Federation space, reaching the key system of Alpha Centauri before they are narrowly repulsed. Now, with the war once more at a stalemate, the Grand Alliance must try to recover their losses and break the deadlock. Unable to communicate or negotiate with the Bugs, the Alliance realises that the war has become a fight for the survival of their respective species and invoke Directive 18, last used against the Rigelians, and embark upon a war of species extermination. David Weber
David Mark Weber (born October 24, 1952) is an American science fiction and fantasy author. He has written several science-fiction and fantasy books series, the best known of which is the Honorverse, Honor Harrington science-fiction series. His debut novel, first novel, which he worked on with Steve White, sold in 1989 to Baen Books. Baen remains Weber's major publisher. Writing career Born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 24, 1952, Weber began writing while in elementary school, fifth grade. Some of Weber's first jobs within the writing/advertising world began after high school when he worked as copywriter, typesetter, proofreader, and paste-up artist. He later earned an undergraduate degree from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina and a Master of Arts, M.A. in history from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Baen Books () is an American publishing house for science fiction and fantasy. In science fiction, it emphasizes space opera, hard science fiction, and military science fiction. The company was established in 1983 by science fiction publisher and editor Jim Baen. After his death in 2006, he was succeeded as publisher by long-time executive editor Toni Weisskopf. The planetary systems of stars other than the Sun and the Solar System are a staple element in many works of the science fiction genre. Overview The notion that there might be inhabited extrasolar planets can be traced at least as far back as Giordano Bruno who, in his '' De l'infinito, universo e mondi'' (''On the Infinite, Universe and Worlds'', 1584), declared that "There are then innumerable suns, and an infinite number of earths revolve around those suns, hese worlds are inhabitedif not exactly as our own, and if not more nobly, at least no less inhabited and no less nobly." The Baen Free Library is a digital library of the science fiction and fantasy publishing house Baen Books where 61 e-books as of June 2016 (112 e-books as of December 2008) can be downloaded free in a number of formats, without copy protection. It was founded in late 1999 by science fiction writer Eric Flint and publisher Jim Baen to determine whether the availability of books free of charge on the Internet encourages or discourages the sale of their paper books. The Baen Free Library represents an experiment in the field of intellectual property and copyright. Alpha Centauri
Alpha Centauri ( Latinized from α Centauri and often abbreviated Alpha Cen or α Cen) is a triple star system in the constellation of Centaurus. It consists of 3 stars: Alpha Centauri A (officially Rigil Kentaurus), Alpha Centauri B (officially Toliman) and Alpha Centauri C (officially Proxima Centauri). Proxima Centauri is also the closest star to the Sun at 4.2465 light-years (1.3020 pc). Steve White (author)
Stephen White (born 1948), is an American science fiction author best known as the co-author of the ''Starfire'' series along with David Weber. He is married with three daughters and currently lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. He also works for a legal publishing company. He previously served as a United States Navy officer and served during the Vietnam War and in the Mediterranean region. Career Stephen White wrote short stories set in the '' Starfire'' universe that were published by Task Force Games in their ''Nexus'' magazine, and wrote the ''Starfire'' novel ''Insurrection'' (1990) with David Weber after ''Nexus'' was cancelled in 1988; this book was the first in a tetralogy that concluded with their final collaboration, ''The New York Times'' bestseller '' The Shiva Option'' (2002).
