The Ship Of Lost Souls
''The Ship of Lost Souls'' or ''The Ship of Lost Men'' (German: ''Das Schiff der verlorenen Menschen'') is a 1929 German silent thriller film directed by Maurice Tourneur and starring Fritz Kortner, Marlene Dietrich and Robin Irvine. It was Dietrich's last silent film before ''The Blue Angel'' made her an international star. It was shot at the Staaken Studios in Berlin, and partly on location around Rostock. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Franz Schroedter and Fritz Maurischat. Fritz Maurischat (April 27, 1893 in Berlin – December 11, 1986) was a German production designer. He made his film debut in 1924. Over the next 38 years, he worked on over 70 films, all of them in his native Germany. He earned an Oscar nomination in 1953 for his work on the film ''Martin Luther'', an American film about Martin Luther made in Germany. He is also noted as the Art Director for the 1943 Nazi propaganda film ''Titanic''. Ferdinand "Fred" Immler (10 December 1880 –20 February 1965) was a German stage and film actor. Life Born in Coburg, as a young adult he worked from 1900 to 1902 at Deutsche Bank in Berlin and from 1902 to 1904 at Dresdner Bank. 1905 he returned to Coburg as an actor-in-training and from 1906 to 1908 he performed at the local court theatre. From 1908 to 1909, he worked at the Residence Theater Hanover, 1909 at the Summer Theatre in Posen and from 1909 to 1910 at the court theatre in Gera. 1910, he played at the Liebich Theatre and at the Victoria Theatre in Breslau. Heinrich Gotho (May 3, 1872 – August 28, 1938) was an Austrian film actor. Born in Dolina (now in Ukraine), he started his acting career at some provincial theatres until he found an engagement at the Neues Volkstheater in Berlin. The character actor appeared in over 50 films between 1922 and 1933, mostly in smaller roles. He notably appeared in numerous films by director Fritz Lang, among them '' Dr. Mabuse the Gambler'' (1922), ''Metropolis'' (1927) and '' M'' (1931). Gotho was forced to retire from film acting in 1933; as a Jew he could no longer work in Nazi Germany. He died in 1938 in the ''Jewish Hospital'' of Berlin-Wedding.
