The Secret (1955 Film)
''The Secret'' is a 1955 British crime drama directed by Cy Endfield and starring Sam Wanamaker, Mandy Miller, and André Morell. Plot Nick Delaney, an American stranded in England without money, meets a woman who has smuggled diamonds into the country inside a teddy bear. But his hopes for financial aid are shattered when she is pushed from a cliff. Delaney then finds himself the prime suspect. He finally gets his hands on the gems but loses them to a gang of crooks. Can Delaney prove his innocence and shop the crooks to the police? Cy Endfield
Cyril Raker Endfield (November 10, 1914 – April 16, 1995) was an American screenwriter, director, author, magician and inventor. Having been named as a Communist at a House Un-American Activities Committee hearing and subsequently blacklisted, he moved to the United Kingdom in 1953, where he spent the remainder of his career. Early life Endfield was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to a Jewish immigrant father whose business was hit hard by the Great Depression. He attended Yale University. Career in the U.S. Endfield began his career as a theatre director and drama coach, becoming a significant figure in New York's progressive theatre scene. It was largely through a shared interest in magic that Orson Welles became aware of Endfield and recruited him as an apprentice for Mercury Productions (then based at RKO Pictures). Harold Berens (born Isadore Harold Berenbaum; 4 March 1903 – 10 May 1995) was a British comedian and character actor. Biography He was born into a Jewish family in Glasgow, the son of a tailor, and grew up and was educated in Leeds, Harrogate, and Brussels. After his father built up a successful business in Brighton, he moved there, and began performing at show business parties organised by his father. After completing his education he worked as a shirt salesman, primarily to a show business clientele, while developing his own talent for comedy, especially his ability to imitate a wide range of different dialects, at private functions. In the 1930s he opened his own shop in Regent Street, London, where he styled himself as "Shirtmaker to the Stars". Aimée Delamain (21 April 1906 – 18 June 1999) was an English actress, known for spending most of her career playing elderly ladies. Biography Her father, Colonel Frank Delamain was a member of King Edward XI's Bengal Lancers. Upon his retirement in 1909, the family moved to Lamberhurst, Kent.Obituary in ''The Stage'', 15 July 1999 (pg.27) Tragedy struck in 1915 when Aimée's mother Mabel (née Bullock) died of rheumatic fever and the following year her elder brother Frank Gun Delamain was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme.
