The Second Victory (novel)
''The Second Victory'' is a 1958 novel by Morris West. It was also known as Backlash. Premise In post war Austria, Major Mark Hanlon, Occupation Commander of the alpine town of Bad Quellenberg, investigates the murder of his driver. Reception The ''Bulletin'' wrote "West is concerned here more with the nature of justice, mercy and moral responsibility in war and peace than with thriller-writing; which is a pity, because his very plain Catholicism, though impressively sincere, produces very little original insight into any of these things." Film Version Universal Pictures bought the film rights and West wrote the script in the late 1950s. In November 1958 Henry Denker was hired to write the script, for producer Robert Arthur, by which time the title had changed to ''A Gathering of Eagles''. Morris Langlo West (26 April 19169 October 1999) was an Australian novelist and playwright, best known for his novels '' The Devil's Advocate'' (1959), ''The Shoes of the Fisherman'' (1963) and ''The Clowns of God'' (1981). His books were published in 27 languages and sold more than 60 million copies worldwide. Each new book he wrote after he became an established writer sold more than one million copies. West's works were often focused on international politics and the role of the Roman Catholic Church in international affairs. In ''The Shoes of the Fisherman'' he described the election and career of a Slav as Pope, 15 years before the historic election of Karol Wojtyła as Pope John Paul II. The sequel, ''The Clowns of God'', described a successor Pope who resigned the papacy to live in seclusion, 32 years before the abdication of Pope Benedict XVI in 2013. ''The Beverley Times'' is a defunct English language newspaper that was published weekly in the Wheatbelt town of Beverley, Western Australia, between 1905 and 1977. History ''The Beverley Times'' first circulated on 22 July 1905 and was published by the manager Henry Courtney at The Beverley Times Newspaper and General Printing Office on Vincent Street, Beverley, for the proprietor Chas Dawson, Newcastle. Initially the newspaper shared its office space with the local Catholic Church who ran services in the front of the building, however in 1908 the building was sold to Athol Thomas who opened a news agency and continued to print ''The Beverley Times'' in the rear of the building.
