The Second Saint Petersburg Gymnasium
The Second Saint Petersburg Gymnasium is one of the oldest schools in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was founded in 1805 by Emperor Alexander I. The Gymnasium is located in the Admiralteysky District of Saint Petersburg. Many of the students are participants of all kinds of the city, national and international Olympiads, contests, conferences and competitions. There is a big number of prize winners among them. The gymnasium is usually involved in international projects such as the MUN project with its annual international conferences, the Russian-Finnish project “ICT-based Education as a Driver of Change in Learning”, the International Science Olympiad and others; cultural exchange programmes, international festivals and competitions. Yuri Krutkov
Yuri Alexandrovich Krutkov (russian: Юрий Александрович Крутков, 29 May 1890 – 12 September 1952) was a Russian and among the first Soviet theoretical physicists. Krutkov worked on cosmology, quantum theory, statistical mechanics, tensor fields, and other areas. He was a professor of physics at the University of St. Petersburg from 1921-1952. Krutkov was born in St. Petersburg where his father Alexander taught Greek, Latin and Russian. The family moved to Lubny for sometime. Krutkov graduated from the St. Petersburg gymnasium in 1908 and went to study physics at the University where he studied under Paul Ehrenfest. Ivan Borgman
Ivan Ivanovich Borgman (24 February 1849- 17 May 1914) was a Russian physicist who first demonstrated in 1897 that X-rays and radioactive materials induced thermoluminescence. Biography Borgman was born to a Russified Finnish-born father and a Russian mother. After graduating from the Second Saint Petersburg Gymnasium, he entered the Physics and Mathematics department of Saint Petersburg State University, in 1866 and graduated in 1870. In 1873, Borgman went to the University of Heidelberg, where he attended lectures and studied in the laboratory under the German physicist Gustav Kirchhoff. In 1875, he was appointed as a laboratory assistant at St. Petersburg University. Borgman received his Doctorate in 1882 after defending his thesis "On Slight heating of iron in the magnetization." Eugene Botkin
Yevgeny Sergeyevich Botkin (russian: Евгений Сергеевич Боткин; 27 March 1865 – 17 July 1918), commonly known as Eugene Botkin, was the court physician since 1908 for Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra. He sometimes treated the Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich of Russia for haemophilia-related complications, like in Spala in 1912. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Botkin went into exile with the Romanov family, accompanying them to Tobolsk and Yekaterinburg in Siberia. He was murdered with the Imperial family by guards on 17 July 1918. Like the Romanov family, Botkin was canonised in 1981 as a New Martyr by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. Prince Alexander Mikhailovich Gorchakov (Russian: Алекса́ндр Миха́йлович Горчако́в; 15 July 179811 March 1883) was a Russian diplomat and statesman from the Gorchakov princely family.
