The Scout (play)
''The Scout'' is a melodrama by Alfred Dampier and Garnet Walch set in the American west. The play came about in part because of the success Dampier had with his production of ''The Miner's Right''. He decided to construct a play where he would feature W.F. Carver and his Wild America Troupe into a dramatic story. Carver would play himself and the production would feature a hughe water tank, 12 x 3 metres, featuring real ducks, Indians padding canoes and stunts involving horses.Katherine Brisbane, ''Entertaining Australia: An Illustrated History'' p 118 The original production starred Lily Dampier alongside Carver, and was a considerable success. ''The Trapper'' Dampier later reworked the play as ''The Trapper'' for Carver and Lily. Carver later performed ''The Scout'' in the USA, although it was not advertised as an Australian play. Garnet Walch
Garnet Walch (1 October 1843 in Broadmarsh (Tasmania) – 3 January 1913 in Melbourne), was an Australian writer, dramatist, journalist and publisher. From 1872 on, he became very popular as author of numerous pantomimes, burlesques, melodramas, comedies and comediettas. Walch was the youngest son of Major J. W. H. Walch, of H.M. 54th Regiment. He was secretary to the Melbourne Athenaeum between 1873 and 1879. As a publisher, his most outstanding work was ''Victoria in 1880'', a de luxe book with lavish engravings by Charles Turner, compiled by Walch and published by George Robertson in Melbourne, celebrating the 1880–1881 International Exhibition. The book was inscribed to ''The Honourable William John Clarke, President of the Victorian International Exhibition Commission''. Alexandra Theatre, Melbourne
Her Majesty's Theatre is a 1,700-seat theatre in Melbourne's East End Theatre District, Australia. Built in 1886, it is located at 219 Exhibition Street, Melbourne. It is classified by the National Trust of Australia and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Purchased in 2000 by Mike Walsh, the theatre was restored and refitted to accommodate larger productions. History The first recorded use of the area near the corner of Stephen (now known as Exhibition) Street and Little Bourke Street as a venue for entertainment was in 1880, when tiered seating was constructed and an openair venue for circuses and equestrian shows established. The Hippodrome lasted four years before the French born entrepreneur, Jules François de Sales Joubert, secured a 30-year lease on the site and commissioned architect Nahum Barnet to design a theatre, business and accommodation complex. ''The Record'' was a weekly newspaper published in Melbourne, Victoria, from 1869 to at least 1954, serving Port Melbourne, Albert Park, Middle Park, and Garden City. Lily Dampier
Katherine Annabel Lily Dampier (1867 or 1868 – 6 February 1915), known as Lily Dampier, was an Australian actor of stage and screen. She was the daughter of Alfred Dampier and married to Alfred Rolfe. Her best known stage parts were Sylvia in ''For the Term of His Natural Life'' and Kate in ''Robbery Under Arms''. She also performed many roles from Shakespeare and worked in England. A contemporary described her as a better actress than her sister Rose: Certainly she was the more forceful, physically, and vocally, but she was disqualified for high tragic roles by the fact that she had ridiculously small feet for a well developed woman, and used to walk in mincing and tottering steps in moments when rhythmic striding was needed. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Widely known as a conservative newspaper for most of its history, it adopted a left-leaning approach from 1949. ''The Argus''s main competitor was David Syme's more liberal-minded newspaper, ''The Age''.
