John Croyston
John Croyston (7 March 1933 - 23 May 2007) was an Australian writer, radio producer and director. He studied at the University of Sydney and worked as a teacher before going on to work at the ABC. He was a radio producer at the ABC from 1958 to 1964. He then moved into television. ''The Schoolmistress'' is a farce by Arthur Wing Pinero. It depicts the complications at a girls' boarding school when the headmistress is away, leaving her feckless husband in charge. The play opened at the Court Theatre, London in March 1886 and ran for 291 performances. Background and first production Pinero's first farce for the Court Theatre, '' The Magistrate'' (1885) had been a considerable success, running for 363 performances, and rescuing the management from financial difficulties caused by earlier, unsuccessful productions. The leading figures in the new piece were written for the stars of ''The Magistrate'', Arthur Cecil and Mrs John Wood. Arthur Wing Pinero
Sir Arthur Wing Pinero (24 May 185523 November 1934) was an English playwright and, early in his career, actor. Pinero was drawn to the theatre from an early age, and became a professional actor at the age of 19. He gained experience as a supporting actor in British provincial theatres, and from 1876 to 1881 was a member of Henry Irving's company, based at the Lyceum Theatre, London, Lyceum Theatre, London. Pinero wrote his first play in 1877. Seven years later, having written 15 more, three of them highly successful, he abandoned acting and became a full-time playwright. He first became known for a series of farces, of which ''The Magistrate (play), The Magistrate'' (1885) was the longest-running. During the 1890s he turned to serious subjects. Jeanie Drynan is an Australians, Australian film and television actress well known for her roles in the television series ''Class of '74'' and in the 1994 film ''Muriel's Wedding''. Clarissa Kaye (2 August 193121 July 1994) was an Australian stage, film and television actress. She was the second wife (1971–1984) of the British actor James Mason. After her marriage, she was often known as Clarissa Kaye-Mason. Biography Clarissa Kaye was born as Clarissa Knipe in Sydney in 1931. In 1958 she became one of a class of informal students of Hayes Gordon, who taught "The Method" (the group included Reg Livermore and Jon Ewing). Their first public performances were a series of one-act plays by Tennessee Williams. The group later became the Ensemble Theatre, Sydney's first theatre in the round and its longest established professional theatre company.
