''The Savage Woman'' (french: La Demoiselle sauvage) is a Canadian drama film from Quebec, released in 1991. Directed by Léa Pool, the film stars Patricia Tulasne as Marianne, a young Canadian expatriate in Switzerland who escapes into the mountains after being assaulted by her boyfriend, and meets Élysée (Matthias Habich), an engineer camped out for the summer to monitor a hydroelectric dam, with whom she begins a new romance before eventually revealing that she killed her attacker."Human fragility captured in murder drama". Léa Pool C.M. (born 8 September 1950) is a Swiss-Canadian filmmaker who taught film at the Université du Québec à Montréal. She has directed several documentaries and feature films, many of which have won significant awards including the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury, and she was the first woman to win the prize for Best Film at the Quebec Cinema Awards. Pool's films often opposed stereotypes and refused to focus on heterosexual relations, preferring individuality. Early life Pool was born in Soglio, Switzerland in 1950, and raised in Lausanne. Her father was Jewish and a Holocaust survivor from Poland; her mother's family was Christian of Swiss descent and she chose to use her mother's last name. Montreal World Film Festival
The Montreal World Film Festival (WFF; french: le Festival des Films du Monde) was one of Canada's oldest international film festivals and the only competitive film festival in North America accredited by the FIAPF (although the Toronto International Film Festival is North America's only accredited non-competitive festival). The public festival, which was founded in 1977 as a replacement for the defunct Montreal International Film Festival (1960–68), is held annually in late August in the city of Montreal in Quebec. Unlike the Toronto International Film Festival, which has a greater focus on Canadian and other North American films, the Montreal World Film Festival has a larger diversity of films from all over the world. ''The Daily News'' was a tabloid newspaper in Halifax, Nova Scotia, that was published from 1974 until ceasing operations in February 2008. History ''The Daily News'' owed its existence to David Bentley, who, along with his wife Diana and Patrick and Joyce Sims, founded The Great Eastern News Company Ltd. in 1974 and started publishing a weekly broadsheet named ''The Bedford-Sackville News''. Genie Award
The Genie Awards were given out annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to recognize the best of Canadian cinema from 1980–2012. They succeeded the Canadian Film Awards (1949–1978; also known as the "Etrog Awards," for sculptor Sorel Etrog, who designed the statuette). Genie Award candidates were selected from submissions made by the owners of Canadian films or their representatives, based on the criteria laid out in the ''Genie Rules and Regulations'' booklet which is distributed to Academy members and industry members. Peer-group juries, assembled from volunteer members of the Academy, meet to screen the submissions and select a group of nominees. Academy members then vote on these nominations.
