The Saturday Show (Radio Sweden)
The Radio Sweden ''Saturday Show'', with Roger Wallis and Kim Loughran, ran from 1967 to 1981. The program was launched to showcase Swedish rock and pop music, especially the Swedish progressive music or alternative music scene, in a world dominated by American and British rock. Using Radio Sweden's relatively high-powered medium wave transmitter on 1179 kHz, the entire program was 90 minutes in length, and features many satirical sketches, often political and sometimes controversial. Roger Wallis
Roger Wallis (8 August 1941 – 22 January 2022) was a British-born Swedish musician, journalist and researcher. Life and career Wallis was a resident of Sweden from 1963, and was an adjunct professor of multimedia at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Between 1967 and 1981, Wallis was the main presenter of the English language ''The Saturday Show'' on Radio Sweden. Wallis also co-wrote " Judy, min vän", the Swedish contribution for the Eurovision Song Contest 1969. He wrote several books on the music industry with Krister Malm. Swedish Rock
Swedish popular music, or shortly Swedish pop music, refers to music that has swept the Swedish mainstream at any given point in recent times. Swedish Progressive Music
Progg was a left-wing and anti-commercial musical movement in Sweden that began in the late 1960s and became more widespread in the 1970s. Not to be confused with the English expressions " progressive music" or " prog rock," progg is a contraction of the Swedish word for musical progressivism, ''progressiv musik''. While there were progg bands playing progressive rock, the progg movement encompassed many different musical genres. The political progg movement culminated around the 1975 Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Stockholm after ABBAs victory in Brighton the year before. It was expressed that "music can't be a contest" and an "alternative festival" was held in protest. Due to this debate, Sweden did not participate in the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest. Shortwave
Shortwave radio is radio transmission using shortwave (SW) radio frequencies. There is no official definition of the band, but the range always includes all of the high frequency band (HF), which extends from 3 to 30 MHz (100 to 10 metres); above the medium frequency band (MF), to the bottom of the VHF band. Radio waves in the shortwave band can be reflected or refracted from a layer of electrically charged atoms in the atmosphere called the ionosphere. Therefore, short waves directed at an angle into the sky can be reflected back to Earth at great distances, beyond the horizon. This is called skywave or "skip" propagation. George Wood (Radio Sweden)
George MacClaren Wood III is an American journalist who has worked at Radio Sweden since 1975, He was born in Berkeley, California on August 10, 1949, and grew up in Piedmont, California. He has degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of California, Berkeley, and participated in the university's Education Abroad Program to Lund University in Sweden, 1969-1970. Radio Sweden George Wood began as a freelance reporter at Radio Sweden in 1975. Following the retirement of Arne Skoog in 1978 he told over the writing and presenting of the program Sweden Calling DXers and its successor MediaScan, until the latter was taken off the air in 2001. In 1994 MediaScan became the first radio program in Sweden and the second in Europe (the first in English) to have its audio posted on the Internet.
