The Sandman (1932 Film)
''The Sandman'' (French: ''Le marchand de sable'') is a 1932 French drama film directed by André Hugon and starring Jean Toulout, Kaissa Robba and Jean Worms. Bessy & Chirat p.205 It was made at the Joinville Studios of Pathé-Natan. Location shooting took place at Ghardaïa in French Algeria. The film's sets were designed by the art director Christian-Jaque. The title refers to the folkloric figure of the Sandman. Synopsis While serving in an outpost in French Algeria, a lieutenant is ordered to investigate the misfortunes that have befallen a number of his fellow soldiers who have fallen ill or vanished. His discoveries take him to a house owned by mysterious White Russian. André Hugon
André Hugon (17 December 1886 – 22 August 1960) was a French film director, screenwriter and film producer best known for his silent films from 1913 onwards, particularly of the 1920s and into sound. Hugon was born in Algiers in 1886 which at the time was part of France. He directed some 90 films between 1913 and 1952. White émigré
White Russian émigrés were Russians who emigrated from the territory of the former Russian Empire in the wake of the Russian Revolution (1917) and Russian Civil War (1917–1923), and who were in opposition to the revolutionary Bolshevik communist Russian political climate. Many white Russian émigrés participated in the White movement or supported it, although the term is often broadly applied to anyone who may have left the country due to the change in regimes.
