The Ross Development Trust
The Ross Development Trust (RDT) is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) established to refurbish West Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh. Their declared mission is ''"to create a unique, internationally recognisable venue for all to enjoy, in an attractive and reanimated West Princes Street Gardens, as a year round, socially inclusive centre promoting a diversity of cultural activities."'' Princes Street Gardens
Princes Street Gardens are two adjacent public parks in the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland, lying in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. The Gardens were created in the 1820s following the long draining of the Nor Loch and building of the New Town, beginning in the 1760s. The loch, situated on the north side of the town, was originally an artificial creation forming part of its medieval defences and made expansion northwards difficult. The water was habitually polluted from sewage draining downhill from the Old Town. The gardens run along the south side of Princes Street and are divided by The Mound, on which the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy buildings are located. Ross Fountain
Ross Fountain is a cast-iron structure located in West Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh. It was installed in 1872 and restored in 2018. History The Ross Fountain was produced at the iron foundry of Antoine Durenne in Sommevoire, France. It was an exhibit at the Great Exhibition of 1862. It was purchased by gunmaker Daniel Ross in 1862 for £2,000 and subsequently gifted to the city of Edinburgh. It was transported to Leith in 1869 in 122 pieces. It was installed in its current position in 1872. It had some extensive restoration work completed in 2001. Norman Springford
Norman Springford (born December 1944) is the former Chairman of The Ross Development Trust and former Executive Chairman of Apex Hotels. An accountant by profession, Norman Springford, worked for the Inland Revenue and then became the owner/manager of a number of public houses, bingo halls, and the Edinburgh Playhouse. He opened his first hotel, the Apex International Hotel, in Edinburgh in 1996. The group now own ten hotels across London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Bath. In 2014 relinquished his position as Chairman of the company, handing over to his son Ian.
