The Riverview Hotel is a heritage register, heritage-listed Australian pub, pub located in Balmain, New South Wales, Balmain, a suburb in the Inner West, inner west region of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Australian swimming champion, Dawn Fraser, was publican of the Riverview from 1978 to 1983. History The Riverview Hotel was built in 1880. Patrick Kearney was licensee of the Tooheys Brewery, Tooheys pub in 1881. Joseph Bergin took over the licence from Herbert Edwards in August 1887. In December 1899 Bergin was granted permission by the water licensing court to change the hotel's name and it became known as Bergin's Hotel. Bergin sold the licence, lease, goodwill and furniture to Tooth and Company in 1908 and was again known as the Riverview Hotel from 1909. Balmain is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Balmain is located west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Inner West Council. Tooheys Brewery
Tooheys is a brewery in the suburb of Lidcombe, in Sydney, Australia. It produces beers and ciders under the ''Tooheys'' and ''Hahn Brewery'' trademarks, and is part of the Lion beverages group which was acquired by the Japanese Kirin Company in 2009. History Tooheys dates from 1869, when John Thomas Toohey (an Irish immigrant to Melbourne) obtained his brewing licence. Toohey and his brother James Matthew ran pubs in Melbourne (The Limerick Arms and The Great Britain) before moving to Sydney in the 1860s. They commenced brewing Tooheys Black Old Ale in a brewery in the area of present-day Darling Harbour. Inner West Council is a local government area located in the inner western region of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The council makes up the eastern part of this wider region, and was formed on 12 May 2016 from the merger of the former Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville councils.
