''Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People'' () is a South Korean television series starring Yoon Kyun-sang, Chae Soo-bin, Kim Ji-seok, Lee Ha-nui, and Kim Sang-joong. It aired on MBC every Monday and Tuesday at 22:00 ( KST) from January 30, 2017 to May 16, 2017. The series was a success with average viewership ratings of 11.34%, and was praised by both critics and audiences for its plot and performances. Synopsis Set during the reign of famous tyrant King Yeonsangun, it tells the story of Hong Gil-dong, the son of a servant who stole from the rich and gave to the poor, and his journey in becoming Joseon's first revolutionary activist. Hong Gil-dong (Korean Thief)
Hong Gil-dong (; 1440 – 1510?) was a Korean outlaw from the Joseon Dynasty. Biography Hong Gil-dong (洪吉同) was a Robin Hood-like Yangban born in the village of Achisil in Agok-ri, Jangseong County, Jeolla province. He was the illegitimate son (孽子) of Hong Sang-jik (洪尙直) and illegitimate grandson of Hong Jing (洪徵). Hong Gil-dong, in the Annals of the Joseon dynasty, was recorded to be born around the year 1443, or the 25th year of the reign of King Sejong (世宗 25年). During the tyrant's reign Yeonsan-gun, peasant armies rose throughout the country. One of the most well-known was the peasant army led by Hong Gil-dong. He, dressed as an aristocrat, attacked the government offices with many armed peasants. In 1500 (燕山 6年), he was captured for his robberies. Seongjong of Joseon (19 August 1457 – 20 January 1495), personal name Yi Hyeol (Korean: ; Hanja: ), was the ninth ruler of the Joseon dynasty of Korea. Before succeeding his uncle, King Yejong, he was known as Grand Prince Jalsan (Korean: 잘산대군; Hanja: 乽山大君).
