The Rapid Development
''Il rapido sviluppo'' (''The Rapid Development'') is an apostolic letter signed by Pope John Paul II on 24 January 2005; it mainly addresses those who are involved in communications. He signed the letter on January 24, the feast day of Saint Francis de Sales, Patron Saint of Journalists. Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1963 decree ''Inter Mirifica'' ("The Means of Social Communication"), Pope John Paul II writes about how the message found in ''Inter Mirifica'' is strengthened by the development of technical inventions. The Jesuit magazine ''America'' referred to the document as "the most authoritative papal statement on the church and communications in nearly 50 years", and aims to make the Church pay "attention to the culture created by communications media". The document suggests that the internet provides an opportunity for the Church, not just a danger. The Pontifical Council for Social Communications ( la, Pontificium Consilium de Communicationibus Socialibus) was a dicastery of the Roman Curia that was suppressed in March 2016 and merged into the Secretariat for Communications (now "Dicastery for Communication"). According to ''Pastor bonus'', Pope John Paul II's 1988 apostolic constitution on the Roman Curia, the council was "involved in questions regarding the means of social communication, so that, also by these means, human progress and the message of salvation may benefit secular culture and mores." It worked "to encourage and support" the Church and its members in social communication to imbue mass media "with a human and Christian spirit." Inter Mirifica
''Inter mirifica'' (''Among the wonderful''), subtitled "Decree on the Media of Social Communication", is one of the Second Vatican Council's 16 magisterial documents. The final text was approved on 24 November 1963 by a vote of 1,598 to 503. On 4 December 1963, it was promulgated by Pope Paul VI, after another vote, this time of 1,960 in favour and 164 opposed. It is composed of 24 points, with the aim of addressing the concerns and problems of social communication. ''Inter mirifica'' identifies social communication as the press, cinema, television, and other similar types of communication interfaces. The term ''social communications'', apart from its more general use, has become the preferred term within documents of the Catholic Church for reference to media or mass media. John Patrick Foley
John Patrick Foley (November 11, 1935 – December 11, 2011) was an American cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. From 2007 until 2011, he was Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, an order of knighthood under papal protection, having previously served as President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications from 1984 to 2007. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 2007. He provided the commentary for the American television viewers of the Christmas Midnight Mass from St Peter's Basilica, Rome. However, in 2009, he retired from that role after 25 years. The commentary was taken over by Monsignor Thomas Powers of the Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut, an official in the Congregation for Bishops.
