The Prisoner (1963 Film)
''The Prisoner'' is a 1962 Australian television play based on a play which had been filmed with Alec Guinness. Many Australian TV dramas at the time were based on overseas stories. Cast *Christopher Hill as the interrogator *Michael Duffield as the prisoner *John Gray as the cell warden Production Sterling aimed to recreate prison through the mind of a prisoner. Reception The critic from the ''Sydney Morning Herald'' wrote that, "no thumb-screw or rack could have seemed more incredible than did the weapons in the verbal armoury of the interrogator, played so as to be fairly obviously diabolical by Christopher Hill... The camera circled and shifted as ominously as the dialogue; the shadows and lights of William Sterling's production accentuated the probing nightmare; but in the end one was not quite sure how it all had happened." William Sterling (director)
William Sterling (born 14 September 1926) was an Australian producer and director. He was born in Sydney, New South Wales. Biography Sterling was born in Sydney, one of two brothers. When his father was killed during World War II, Sterling left school to work in a chartered accountant's office. He served in the Royal Australian Navy then did a Bachelor of Arts at Sydney University, with Honours in English and History. He was going to be a teacher but then got a job as liaison officer between the ABC and the Department of Education. He began writing and producing radio plays, and in 1956 moved into directing television at the ABC. He moved to Melbourne in 1957. He originally directed all sorts of programs for the ABC but in October 1959 was assigned to drama full time. Audrey Rogers was his assistant. Campbell Copelin
Campbell Copelin (1901–1988) was an English actor, who moved to Australia in the 1920s and worked extensively in film, theatre, radio and television. He had a notable association with J.C. Williamson Ltd and frequently collaborated with F. W. Thring and Frank Harvey. He often played villains. Biography He served in the Army, then emigrated to Australia. He worked on the land, then as a commercial artist before deciding to become an actor. Criminal History In 1928 he was fined for using indecent language and resisting arrest. On the night of 18 March 1931 Copelin took a £1,000 plane out for a joyride in Melbourne and crashed it into Sandridge golf links, causing him to spend several months in hospital.
