The Priest And The Girl
''The Priest and the Girl'' ( pt, O Padre e a Moça) is a 1966 Brazilian drama film directed by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, based on Carlos Drummond de Andrade's poem of the same name. The directorial debut of Andrade, it was shot on São Gonçalo dos Rios das Pedras, Gruta de Maquiné, and Espinhaço Mountains, all locations of Minas Gerais. Plot It is set in 1965 in São Gonçalo dos Rios das Pedras, a district of Serro, Minas Gerais. A newly ordained priest arrives at the town and meets Fortunato, an influential merchant, and his concubine, Mariana. The girl's father, a prospector, died when she was ten and she was raised by Fortunato. When she becomes older, Fortunato wants to marry Mariana, but she and the priest run away together. Joaquim Pedro De Andrade
Joaquim Pedro de Andrade (May 25, 1932 – September 10, 1988) was a Brazilian film director and screenwriter. He was a member of the Cinema Novo movement in Brazil. Andrade is best known for his 1969 film '' Macunaíma'', based loosely on the novel of the same title by Mário de Andrade. His 1962 documentary film '' Garrincha: Hero of the Jungle'' was entered into the 13th Berlin International Film Festival. Serro
Serro is a Brazilian municipality located in the state of Minas Gerais. The city belongs to the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte and to the microregion of Conceição do Mato Dentro. As of 2020, the estimated population was 20,940. In colonial times the city was known by the name ''Vila do Príncipe'' ('). In this city were born Emerico Lobo de Mesquita, one of the most prominent composers of the Classicism movement in Brazil, and Gomes Carneiro, a general who fought on the Paraguayan War and on the Federalist Revolution. Cinemateca Brasileira
The Cinemateca Brasileira is the institution responsible for preserving Brazilian audiovisual production. In July 2021, it experienced a major fire. Since 1940, it has been developing activities around the dissemination and restoration of its collection, with around 250 thousand rolls of films and more than one million documents related to cinema. It is located in Largo Senador Raul Cardoso, São Paulo. The building previously acted as the Old Municipal Slaughterhouse of São Paulo from 1887 to 1927. It had the largest collection of "moving images" in Latin America and is one of the largest institutions of its kind in the world. It preserved a large part of the nation's cinematographic content and houses the greatest collection of Brazilian cinema, with more than 250,000 rolls of film. Guanabara (state)
The State of Guanabara ( pt, Estado da Guanabara, ) was a state within the Fourth Brazilian Republic from 1960 to 1964, and the Federative Republic of Brazil from 1964 to 1975. It included the city of Rio de Janeiro. The state was established in 1960, replacing the Federal District of Brazil, and existed until 1975, when it was merged with the old State of Rio de Janeiro to create a juridically new state also named State of Rio de Janeiro.
