The Police Dog
The Police Dog is an animated cartoon series created by Bray Studios, who produced twelve shorts from 1914 to 1918. History The series was created by Carl Anderson, a first-generation Norwegian-American cartoonist born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1865. He was one of the oldest staff members at Bray Studios and was 14 years older than the studio's owner. Although Anderson had considered making an animated adaptation of his earlier comic strip '' The Filipino and the Chick'' (also known as ''Little Filipino and the Chick''), nothing ever came of the idea and the Police Dog series was Anderson's main project at Bray Studios. Originally, Anderson made Pinkerton Pup a more realistic dog, but he got more anthropomorphic over time. The series ran from 1914-1916. Bray Studios
Bray Productions was a pioneering American animation studio that produced several popular cartoons during the years of World War I and the early interwar era, becoming a springboard for several key animators of the 20th century, including the Fleischer brothers, Walter Lantz, Paul Terry, Shamus Culhane and Grim Natwick among others. History The studio was founded sometime before 1912 by John Randolph Bray. It was perhaps one of the first studios entirely devoted to serial animation at the time instead of one-off experiments. Its first series was Bray's '' Colonel Heeza Liar'', but from the beginning, the studio brought in outsiders to direct promising new series. Carl Thomas Anderson (February 14, 1865 – November 4, 1948) was an American cartoonist best remembered for his comic strip ''Henry''. Readers followed the pantomime adventures of the mute, bald-headed Henry in strips which he signed with his familiar signature displaying an enlarged "S": Carl AnderSon. Biography Early life Carl Thomas Anderson was born in Madison, Wisconsin, the son of Norwegian immigrants. Anderson initially worked in his father's planing mill in Des Moines, Iowa, where he developed carpentry skills, became a cabinetmaker, and invented a patented folding desk, which is still being manufactured today. Henry (comics)
''Henry'' is a (the funniest living American) comic strip created in 1932 by Carl Thomas Anderson. The title character is a young bald boy who is mute (and sometimes drawn minus a mouth). With the exception of a few early episodes, the comic strip character communicates largely but not entirely through pantomime, a situation which changed when Henry moved into comic books. Henry has spoken in at least one Betty Boop cartoon from 1935. In the feature Betty Boop has a pet shop and Henry speaks to a dog in the window. ''The Saturday Evening Post'' was the first publication to feature ''Henry'', a series which began when Anderson was 67 years old. The series of cartoons continued in that magazine for two years in various formats of single panel, multiple panels or two panels. It then moved to newspaper syndication on December 17, 1934.
