''The Phantom of the Opera'' is a musical theatre, musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart (lyricist), Charles Hart, and a libretto by Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe. Based on the 1910 The Phantom of the Opera, French novel of the same name by Gaston Leroux, it tells the story of a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, masked musical genius living in the subterranean labyrinth beneath the Palais Garnier, Paris Opéra House. The musical opened in London's West End theatre, West End in 1986 and on Broadway theatre, Broadway in New York in 1988, in a production directed by Harold Prince and starring English classical soprano Sarah Brightman (Lloyd Webber's then-wife) as Christine Daaé, and Michael Crawford as the Phantom. Andrew Lloyd Webber, Baron Lloyd-Webber (born 22 March 1948), is an English composer and impresario of musical theatre. Several of his musicals have run for more than a decade both in the West End and on Broadway. He has composed 21 musicals, a song cycle, a set of variations, two film scores, and a Latin Requiem Mass.
