The Pennant
''The Pennant'' is a weekly newspaper published in Penola, South Australia, from July 1946. Along with ''The Border Watch'', it was most recently owned by the Scott Group of Companies. After 74 years of publishing, however, the newspaper (along with sister publication the '' South Eastern Times'') was discontinued on 21 August 2020. However, in March 2022 the newspaper was relaunched with funding after an 18-month hiatus. History ''The Pennant'' was founded by W. Erwin Thiele, who felt that a publication to service the town and local areas was needed after a "lack of communication from Mount Gambier and Naracoorte was evident". It was first published on Thursday, 25 July 1946, leading with a story about plans to upgrade Penola's Memorial Hospital. Kenneth Victor Dohnt (a New Zealander), assumed control of the paper in 1950 and maintained it until his death in 1971. Penola, South Australia
Penola is a town in the Australian state of South Australia located about southeast of the state capital of Adelaide in the wine growing area known as the Coonawarra. At the , town of Penola had a population of 1,312. It is known as the central location in the life of Mary MacKillop (St. Mary of the Cross), the first Australian to gain Roman Catholic sainthood, in 2010. In 1866 McKillop and a Catholic priest, Julian Tenison-Woods, established a Catholic school in the town. Penola was on the Mount Gambier to Wolseley railway line which opened in 1887, until its closure to freight on 12 April 1995, and then to Limestone Coast Railway tourist passengers on 1 July 2006. Monbulla, South Australia
Monbulla is a locality in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. It is west of Penola and occupies the eastern part of the Hundred of Monbulla. There is no town centre, and the locality population was 127 at the 2016 census. Monbulla school opened in 1894 but has now closed. The locality includes the Penola Conservation Park on its western edge. It is crossed by the roads connecting Penola to Clay Wells (towards Robe), Mount Burr (towards Millicent) and Kalangadoo. ''The Border Watch'' is an Australian newspaper based in Mount Gambier, South Australia, as of October 2020 owned by TBW Today Pty Ltd. The paper services Mount Gambier, the South Australian Limestone Coast, and parts of Western Victoria. It is the oldest and largest regional newspaper in South Australia. After 159 years of publishing the newspaper (along with sister publications '' The Pennant'' and the '' South Eastern Times'') was briefly discontinued on 21 August 2020. Nangwarry, South Australia
Nangwarry is a town and a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about south-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about north-west of the regional centre of Mount Gambier. The Town of Nangwarry was proclaimed under the ''Crown Lands Act 1929'' on 17 October 1974. The boundaries for the locality were proclaimed on 13 December 2001 which include the extent of the Town of Nangwarry and which align with the boundaries of the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Nangwarry. The locality was given the "long established name". Nangwarry has a petrol station, a general store, bottle shop, post office, timber mill, and a museum. And a football / netball team known as the Nangwarry Saints, who play in the Mid South Eastern Football League.
