''The Outcasts of Poker Flat'' is a 1919 American silent film, silent Western (genre), Western film directed by John Ford and featuring Harry Carey (actor born 1878), Harry Carey. The film is considered to be lost film, lost. The screenplay is based upon the The Outcasts of Poker Flat, 1869 story of the same name by Bret Harte. John Ford
John Martin Feeney (February 1, 1894 – August 31, 1973), known professionally as John Ford, was an American film director and naval officer. Gloria Hope (born Olive Frances, November 9, 1901 – October 29, 1976) was an American silent film actress. Life and career She was born as Olive Frances in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1901. Following her education at a Newark, New Jersey, school, she entered upon her career as a screen player and played successively with Ince, Triangle, Artcraft, Ince Paramount, Paralta, Universal and Goldwyn. ''Naughty, Naughty'', ''The Gay Lord Quex'', ''Burglar by Proxy'', ''The Hushed Hour'', ''The Great Love'', and ''Outcasts of Poker Flat'' were a few of the many screen plays she appeared in. For films in which any portion of the footage remains (including trailers), see List of incomplete or partially lost films. Reasons for loss Films may go missing for a number of reasons. One major contributing factor is the common use of nitrate film until the early 1950s. This type of film is highly flammable, and there have been several devastating fires, such as the Universal Pictures fire in 1924, the 1937 Fox vault fire and the 1965 MGM vault fire. Black-and-white film prints judged to be otherwise worthless were sometimes incinerated to salvage the meager scrap value of the silver image particles in their emulsions. Victor Potel (October 12, 1889 – March 8, 1947) was an American film character actor who began in the silent era and appeared in more than 430 films in his 38-year career. Career Victor Potel was born in Lafayette, Indiana in 1889, and his acting career goes back almost to the beginning of the commercial film industry in the United States. He made his first silent film in 1910, a comedy short filmed in Chicago by Essanay Film Manufacturing Company called ''A Dog on Business''. Potel continued to make films for Essanay, appearing in dozens of films every year, including most of the Broncho Billy series, and played a character called "Slippery Slim" in 80 movies. Vester Pegg
Vester Pegg (May 23, 1889 – February 19, 1951) was an American actor of the silent film era. He appeared in 140 films between 1912 and 1941, mainly Westerns. He was born in Appleton City, Missouri and died in Los Angeles, California. Pegg became a picador in 1909, working in a bull ring in Mexico City. He left that job after a bull charged and killed the horse on which Pegg was riding. He moved to California, where he began acting in stock theater. After 18 months of acting on stage, he began acting in films, eventually signing with Universal Pictures, where he worked with Harry Carey's company. Charles Hill Mailes (25 May 1870 – 17 February 1937) was a Canadian actor of the silent era. Biography Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1870, Mailes appeared in 290 films between 1909 and 1935. He married the actress Claire McDowell in 1906 and the happy couple appeared in numerous silent films together including '' The Mark of Zorro'' (1920). They had two sons, Robert and Eugene.
