The Ohio State University Crew Club
The Ohio State University Crew is the rowing club of Ohio State University, located in Columbus, Ohio, in the United States. It was founded in 1978. Open to both men and women, it is an official university club sport. General The team's boathouse, provided by the university, was located on the Olentangy River in the basement of the Drake Performance & Event Center, before it's demolition in 2023. Currently, team members practice on the Scioto Mile in downtown Columbus, or the O'Shaugnessy Reservoir, north of Columbus. Competition The club competes against crews from around the country, including both club teams and varsity programs. The club is a founding member of thAmerican Collegiate Rowing Association and competes in the ACRA national championship regatta on a yearly basis. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. Olentangy River
The Olentangy River is a tributary of the Scioto River in Ohio, United States. History It was originally called ''keenhongsheconsepung'', a Delaware word literally translated as "sharp tool river", based on the shale found along its shores. Early settlers to the region translated this into "Whetstone River". Head Of The Hooch
The Head of the Hooch Regatta, previously known as the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta, is a 2-day rowing regatta held annually on the first full (Saturday and Sunday in the same month) weekend in November in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The head race is currently run downstream on a course on the Tennessee River. It presently ranks as one of the largest rowing regattas in the United States with over 10,000 rowers and over 2,100 boats entered for the 2014 event.Compare Head of the Hooch's 2,236 entries.
