The Newmarket Era
''The Newmarket Era'' is a weekly newspaper that has been published in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, since 1852. History 1850s The ''New Era'' began as a four-page weekly on February 5, 1852, under GeorgeS. Porter, born in 1813 and originally from Norwich, England. He controlled the paper for a year before heading to Australia where he lived into his 100th year. During his tenure the paper reprinted long tracts on topics of the day, but struggled to find a readership among the 500 members of the pre-incorporation village of Newmarket. This was attributed to a lack of money and the education potential of readers. He sold the paper to new arrivals from Toronto, Erastus Jackson and A. E. R. Henderson. Erastus was born August 29, 1829, in Merrickville, Grenville County, son of tanner/shoemaker Christoper Stroud Jackson. Newmarket, Ontario
Newmarket ( 2021 population: 87,942) is a town and regional seat of the Regional Municipality of York in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is part of Greater Toronto in the Golden Horseshoe region of Southern Ontario. The name stems from the fact that the settlement was a "New Market", in contrast to York as the ''Old Market''. The town was formed as one of many farming communities in the area, but also developed an industrial centre on the Northern Railway of Canada's mainline, which was built in 1853 through what would become the downtown area. It also became a thriving market town with the arrival of the Metropolitan Street Railway in 1899. Over time, the town developed into a primarily residential area, and the expansion of Ontario Highway 400 to the west and the construction of Ontario Highway 404 to the east increasingly turned it into a bedroom town since the 1980s. The Progressive Conservative Party of Canada (PC; french: Parti progressiste-conservateur du Canada) was a centre-right federal political party in Canada that existed from 1942 to 2003. Cecil Alexander (Tiny) Cathers (21 April 1901 – 6 December 1989) was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Toronto, Ontario and became a business executive and farmer by career. Frederick Johnson (politician)
Frederick William Johnson (February 13, 1917 – June 20, 1993) was a Canadian lawyer, judge, and the 16th Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan. Life Born in Dudley, Worcestershire, England, the son of a clergyman, he emigrated to Canada with his family settling in Lipton, Saskatchewan when he was eleven. He taught school in Grenfell before serving as an artillery officer during World War II, achieving the rank of major. After the war, he attended the University of Saskatchewan and received a law degree in 1949. He practised law in Regina and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1963. He ran as a Liberal candidate in the 1960 provincial election, losing to Allan Blakeney. In 1962, he ran as a federal Liberal for the electoral district of Regina City, losing to Progressive Conservative Kenneth Hamill More.
