The Newark Academy (formerly The Grove School) is a mixed secondary school in Balderton, Nottinghamshire, England. Admissions The Newark Academy offers GCSEs, BTECs and Cambridge Nationals as programmes of study for pupils. History Former grammar school Newark had a former girls' grammar school, the Lilley and Stone Girls' School, similar to Retford's Retford High School for Girls. Barbara Dibb was the headmistress of this school from 1947 to 1971. The school was also known as the Lilley & Stone Foundation Newark High School for Girls. Comprehensive It became the Grove School in 1976 when Newark went comprehensive, from the Grove Secondary Modern School. The former Lilley and Stone School is a listed building. For the first three years at secondary school, attendance was at the Sconce Hills High School; Paul Upex, a school caretaker, murdered a 13-year-old girl at the school, being jailed in November 1988. Academy (English School)
An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control. The terms of the arrangements are set out in individual Academy Funding Agreements. Most academies are secondary schools, though slightly more than 25% of primary schools (4,363 as of December 2017) are academies. Academies are self-governing non-profit charitable trusts and may receive additional support from personal or corporate sponsors, either financially or in kind. Academies are inspected and follow the same rules on admissions, special educational needs and exclusions as other state schools and students sit the same national exams. Sconce (fortification)
A sconce is a small protective fortification, such as an earthwork, often placed on a mound as a defensive work for artillery. It was used primarily in Northern Europe from the late Middle Ages until the 19th century. This type of fortification was common during the English Civil War, and the remains of one such structure can be seen on Fort Royal Hill in Worcester, England. During the Eighty Years' War for Dutch independence, the sconces (''schans'' in Dutch) were often used to defend strategic places, but were used also during sieges and in circumvallations. Several more or less intact sconces remain in the Netherlands. The Zaanse Schans, one of the top tourist locations in the Netherlands, derived its name from its original function as a sconce. The Girls' Schools Association (GSA) is a professional association of the heads of independent girls' schools. It is a constituent member of the Independent Schools Council. History The GSA can trace its history back to the Association of Headmistresses which was founded in 1874 by Dorothea Beale and Frances Buss. The aim was to agree which issues need challenging and which could be ignored. Buss served as the founding president. Enid Essame of Queenswood School was an honorary secretary before she became president in 1960. She was succeeded by Diana Reader Harris in 1964. Queenswood School
Queenswood School is a girls-only independent school located near Hatfield, Hertfordshire, twenty miles from London. It offers admission at ages 11, 13 or 16 (for sixth form). The ''Good Schools Guide'' 2013 described Queenswood as "a girls' school to which others should aspire." History The school's origins were with "The Educational Home for the Daughters of Wesleyan Ministers" founded in Clapton, London in 1869. After a transfer to Clapham Park the school reopened with its current name in 1894. The head was Marion Waller and she was the daughter of the school's founder David Waller. Marion Waller arrived with Ethel Trew as her assistant. Waller left to marry in 1897 and Trew was persuaded to give up her own ambitions to lead the school. Enid Essame
Enid Mary Essame aka "Emma" Essame (5 December 1906 – 19 December 1999) was a British headmistress whose whole career was teaching at Queenswood School. She led the school from 1944 to 1971. Life Essame was born in Sheffield in 1906. Her Anglican parents were Kate and Oliver Essame. She had an elder sister and two younger brothers. Her father was a clerk for the railways and this caused the family to move to Newarke. She had spent nearly all her life in Leicester attending St Barnabas primary school and then becoming a scholarship girl at Wyggeston Grammar School for Girls and the move to Newarke meant that she had to repeat a year at the Lilley and Stone High School for Girls. Her good school results resumed and she won a scholarship to attend Newnham College in Cambridge in 1925. Archdeacon Of Colchester
The Archdeacon of Colchester is a senior ecclesiastical officer in the Diocese of Chelmsford – she or he has responsibilities within her archdeaconry (the Archdeaconry of Colchester) including oversight of church buildings and some supervision, discipline and pastoral care of the clergy. Annette Cooper
Annette Joy Cooper (born 15 November 1953) is a retired British Church of England priest. She was the Archdeacon of Colchester (in the Diocese of Chelmsford) from 2004 until 2018. Early life Cooper was born on 15 November 1953, the daughter of Harry Whitaker and Grace (née Parnham, later James). She was educated at Lilley and Stone Girls' High School, then an all-girls grammar school in Newark-on-Trent. From 1979 to 1988, Cooper worked as a social worker.
