''The New Standard'' is the thirty-fifth album by jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, released in 1996 on Verve. It consists of jazz renditions of classic and contemporaneous rock and R&B songs. Mercy Street
"Mercy Street" is a song written by the English rock musician Peter Gabriel from his fifth studio album '' So'' (1986). Development on the song began a few years prior to the recording sessions for ''So'' and began with some percussion tracks recorded by Djalma Corrêa in Brazil. Lyrically, the song is based on the literary works of Anne Sexton. A music video was created for "Mercy Street", which was directed by Matt Mahurin and shot in black-and-white. Background and composition The song was inspired by the personal and confessional works of the American poet Anne Sexton, who wrote a play titled ''Mercy Street'' and a poem titled "45 Mercy Street". Herbie Hancock
Herbert Jeffrey Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American jazz musician, bandleader, and composer. He started his career with trumpeter Donald Byrd's group. Hancock soon joined the Miles Davis Quintet, where he helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the post-bop sound. In the 1970s, he experimented with jazz fusion, funk, and electro-funk, electro styles using a wide array of synthesizers and electronics. It was during this time that he released one of his best-known and most influential albums, ''Head Hunters''. Charles "Don" Alias (December 25, 1939 – March 28, 2006) was an American jazz percussionist. Alias was best known for playing congas and other hand drums. He was also a capable drum kit performer. He played drums on the song "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" from trumpeter Miles Davis's album ''Bitches Brew'' (1969) when neither Lenny White nor Jack DeJohnette was able to play the marching band-inspired rhythm requested by Davis. "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)", otherwise known as simply "Norwegian Wood", is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1965 album '' Rubber Soul''.
