The Needles
The Needles is a row of three stacks of chalk that rise about out of the sea off the western extremity of the Isle of Wight in the English Channel, United Kingdom, close to Alum Bay and Scratchell's Bay, and part of Totland, the westernmost civil parish of the Isle of Wight. The Needles Lighthouse stands at the outer, western end of the formation. Built in 1859, it has been automated since 1994. The waters and adjoining seabed form part of the Needles Marine Conservation Zone and the Needles along with the shore and heath above are part of the Headon Warren and West High Down Site of Special Scientific Interest. The formation takes its name from a fourth needle-shaped pillar called Lot's Wife, which collapsed in a storm in 1764. The remaining rocks are not at all needle-like, but the name has stuck. The Needles were featured on the BBC Two TV programme ''Seven Natural Wonders'' (2005) as one of the wonders of Southern England. During Storm Eunice on 18 February 2022, t ...

Project West Ford
Project West Ford (also known as Westford Needles and Project Needles) was a test carried out by Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Laboratory on behalf of the United States military in 1961 and 1963 to create an artificial ionosphere above the Earth. This was done to solve a major weakness that had been identified in military communications. History At the height of the Cold War, all international communications were either sent through submarine communications cables or bounced off the natural ionosphere. The United States military were concerned that the Soviets might cut those cables, forcing the unpredictable ionosphere to be the only means of communication with overseas forces. To mitigate the potential threat, Walter E. Morrow started Project Needles at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory in 1958. The goal of the project was to place a ring of 480,000,000 (Abstract) copper dipole antennas in orbit to facilitate global radio communication. The dipoles collectively pr ...

The structure was originally built in 1908 as El Garces, a Fred Harvey Company#Notable Fred Harvey Hotels, Harvey House and Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) station. The Needles (band)
The Needles were a Scottish four-piece band, who formed in their mid-teens in late 1990s in Aberdeen, Scotland, relocating to Glasgow in 2001. Influenced heavily by 1960s garage punk and late 1970s new wave/powerpop, their first limited-edition single on newly formed indie label Lithium Records sold out within weeks of its release, and the follow-up "We Got the Soul" continued the momentum, garnering positive notices in the ''Melody Maker'' and '' NME'', as well as airplay on Radio 1's Evening Session. Various delays and false dawns followed, and although they continued to release records for a good few years afterwards, switching to the better-funded Dangerous Records in 2002, this early momentum was never truly regained, although their last three singles, "Dianne", "Summer Girls" and "Girl I Used to Know", received a degree of exposure on MTV2, Radio 1, and XFM. The band finally split to pursue new projects in 2007, with Dave, Paul, and John going on to form the Hidden Masters ...
