The Music Men
The Music Men (also styled as The Musicmen) are an Australian comedy act, originally consisting of ten English soccer players, visiting Australia. They first appeared on Australian television performing " I am the Music Man" on the Red Faces segment of ''Hey Hey It's Saturday'' in 1988. In late 1993 the band consisted of Paul Harris, Martin Woodall, Peter Cocker, Dean Hennessy, Joe Sweeney, Sean Lane, Joe Carroll, Mike Hanley, Phil Griffin and leader David Brooks. In 1993 advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi approached them to star in an advertisement for Toohey's Gold. In 1993, Michael Gudinski from Mushroom Records signed the group and they released a single "I Am a Football Fan" in September 1993. Festival Records (later known as Festival Mushroom Records) was an Australian recording and publishing company founded in Sydney, Australia, in 1952 and operated until 2005. Festival was a wholly owned subsidiary of News Limited from 1961 to 2005, and the company was successful for most of its 50-year life, despite the fact that as much as 90% of its annual profit was regularly siphoned off by Rupert Murdoch to subsidise his other media ventures. The Music Man (song)
"The Music Man" (Roud 17774) is a popular cumulative folksong among children, rugby players, and Hash House Harriers. History Peter Kennedy published a song called " The German Musicianer" in " Folk Songs of Britain and Northern Ireland" (1975). It has some similarities with this song. Even earlier, "The Wonderful Musician", written by Walter Greenaway, was published in 1871. The chorus begins: "A big drum, a kettle drum, the fiddle, flute, and piccolo, piano, harp, harmonium and many more beside". The song is also known in Germany as " Ich bin ein Musikante" and adapted in the US to " I Am a Fine Musician". For each verse the participants act out different instruments with specific actions. Its host throughout its entire run was Daryl Somers, who later also became executive producer of the program. The original producer, Gavan Disney, left the program in the 1980s and Somers then jointly formed his own production company, Somers Carroll Productions, with comedy writer and on-screen partner Ernie Carroll, the performer of Somers' pink ostrich puppet sidekick Ossie Ostrich. Tooheys Brewery
Tooheys is a brewery in the suburb of Lidcombe, in Sydney, Australia. It produces beers and ciders under the ''Tooheys'' and ''Hahn Brewery'' trademarks, and is part of the Lion beverages group which was acquired by the Japanese Kirin Company in 2009. History Tooheys dates from 1869, when John Thomas Toohey (an Irish immigrant to Melbourne) obtained his brewing licence. Toohey and his brother James Matthew ran pubs in Melbourne (The Limerick Arms and The Great Britain) before moving to Sydney in the 1860s. Michael Gudinski
Michael Solomon Gudinski AM (22 August 1952 – 2 March 2021) was an Australian record executive and promoter who was a leading figure in the Australian music industry. Born and raised in Melbourne to Jewish Russian immigrants, Gudinski formed the highly successful Australian record company Mushroom Records in 1972 through which he signed several generations of Australian musicians and performers ranging from MacKenzie Theory, the Skyhooks, The Choirboys, Kylie Minogue, and New Zealand's Split Enz to newer artists such as Eskimo Joe, Evermore and others.
