The Murrumbidgee Irrigator
''The Irrigator'', formerly ''The Murrumbidgee Irrigator'', is a weekly newspaper published in Leeton, New South Wales, Australia, since 1915. History ''The Murrumbidgee Irrigator'' was first published on 23 April 1915 only a few years after the establishment of the town. Its circulation included Barellan, Brobenah, Darlington Point, Leeton, Mirrool, Whitton, Wilbriggie, and Yanco. It changed hands a number of times. John Joseph Sullivan owned the paper early in its history, while it was later acquired by Rupert Henderson, who was first general manager of John Fairfax & Sons and later managing director. In November 2001, it was renamed ''The Irrigator'' and remains in publication under this name. Yanco
Yanco is a village with a population of 505 in Leeton Shire in south western New South Wales, Australia. Yanco is a Wiradjuri aboriginal language word meaning ''the sound of running water''. Yanco is located from Leeton along Irrigation Way. Yanco is home to the Powerhouse Museum, McCaughey Park, Murrumbidgee Rural Studies Centre and Yanco Agricultural High School. Yanco North Post Office opened on 1 March 1888. It was renamed ''Yanko'' in 1892 and ''Yanco'' in 1928. Football The town has a team in the Group 20 Rugby League competition with neighbouring village Wamoon, the Yanco-Wamoon Hawks. They are renowned for winning five successive titles from 1992 to 1996, a competition record. The ''Irrigation Record'' was a fortnightly newspaper published in Leeton, New South Wales, Australia from 15 February 1913 to 15 June 1917 by the NSW Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission. Its purpose was to educate new settlers of the fledgling Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA), about agricultural methods, irrigation techniques, crops, stock and machinery. History Leeton, New South Wales, Leeton was the first town to be planned under the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area scheme. The ''Irrigation Record'' commenced publication in 1913 and its stated aim was to educate the local residents about irrigation and farming. Whitton is a small town located in Leeton Shire in the Australian state of New South Wales and is located 23km west of the Leeton,_New_South_Wales, Leeton township. Founded in 1850, it is named after John Whitton (1820–98), Engineer-in-Charge of the New South Wales Government Railways. The railway reached Whitton in 1881. Mirrool is a town in the northern part of the Riverina region of south-west New South Wales, Australia. The town is in the Bland Shire local government area and adjacent to the Newell Highway, south west of the state capital, Sydney. At the , Mirrool and the surrounding area had a population of 234. The place name ''Mirrool'' is derived from the local Aboriginal word meaning "Pipe Clay". Mirrool Post Office opened on 16 November 1911 and closed in 1982. A railway station opened with the opening of the railway line in 1908, and closed in 1985 after passenger services ceased in 1983. The town's pub was built between 1913 and 1916 and opened in 1917.
