The Mother Of Kings
''The Mother of Kings'' ( pl, Matka Królów) is a 1982 Polish drama film, directed by Janusz Zaorski. It was immediately banned by the Polish Communist regime - having depicted that regime as baselessly hounding and persecuting a loyal and devoted party member. The film only received a proper release in 1987.http://csac.buffalo.edu/blindchance.pdf It was entered into the 38th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear for an outstanding single achievement. Plot The early part of the film takes place in 1930's Poland. Lucja Krol, a working-class woman, loses her husband who was run over by a tram. Soon afterwards she gives birth to her fourth son, alone on the floor in her apartment. Lucja's neighbor Wiktor who is a Communist intellectual, tries to help the poverty-stricken Lucja and her children, but is arrested and imprisoned by Poland's pre-war right-wing regime. Janusz Zaorski
Janusz Zaorski (born 19 September 1947) is a Polish film director, scenarist and actor, representative of the cinema of moral anxiety ( pl, kino moralnego niepokoju), trend in Polish cinema. Zaorski has directed mainly psychological dramas, comedies and TV series. Zaorski graduated National Film School in Łódź in 1969. He made his own individual film director debut in 1970. In 1987 Zaorski was selected as a chairman of the Polish Federation of Film Societies (''Polska Federacja Dyskusyjnych Klubów Filmowych''). Joanna Szczepkowska (Polish pronunciation: ; born 1 May 1953) is a Polish film and theatre actress and writer. She appeared in more than thirty films since 1975. Life and career She made her debut on televion in 1975 by appearing in episode 1 of the cult 1970s TV series ''Czterdziestolatek'' (The Forty-Year-Old). Krzysztof Zaleski
Krzysztof Zaleski (September 3, 1948 – October 20, 2008) was a Polish theater director and cinema actor. Zaleski was born in Świętochłowice, Poland, on September 3, 1948. He graduated from Warsaw University's Department of Polish Studies in 1971. He further completed his studies at the State Higher Theatre School in Warsaw in 1986. He received numerous awards throughout his career for his work within the Warsaw theater community. In 2007, Zaleski was awarded the Feliks’ Award for his adaptation of series of short stories originally written by Marek Nowakowski. Zaleski worked as the Director of Polish Radio Drama. Additionally, he served as the director of Director of Polish Radio 2 for the last 18 months of his life. Krzysztof Zaleski died on October 20, 2008, in Warsaw at the age of 59 after a long illness. Kazimierz Brandys (27 October 1916 – 11 March 2000) was a Polish essayist and writer of film scripts. Biography Brandys was born in Łódź. He was the brother of the writer Marian Brandys and husband of the translator . He graduated in law from the University of Warsaw. He was first published in 1935 as a theatre critic, in the literary monthly ' (Anvil of Youth). Between 1945 and 1950 he was a member of the editorial board of the weekly ' (The Smithy). In 1946 he joined the Polish Workers' Party. His literary career took off with the publication of his account of the two Warsaw uprisings during World War II. From 1956 onwards he was the spokesman for the Polish United Workers' Party, Polish communist party's programme of "renewal" and "moral cleansing".
