The Morals Of Marcus (1935 Film)
''The Morals of Marcus'' is a 1935 British comedy film directed by Miles Mander and starring Lupe Vélez, Ian Hunter and Adrianne Allen. The screenplay concerns an archaeologist who finds a woman hiding in his luggage who has escaped from a harem and they eventually fall in love and marry. ''The Morals of Marcus'' was previously filmed twice as silents in 1915 with Marie Doro and in 1921 with May McAvoy. Production It was based on the novel '' The Morals of Marcus Ordeyne'' by William John Locke and was filmed at Twickenham Studios. It was part of the producer Julius Hagen's ambitious programme of film production at Twickenham. Hagen brought in Vélez, a leading Mexican actress, to give the film greater international appeal. Miles Mander
Miles Mander (born Lionel Henry Mander; 14 May 1888 – 8 February 1946), was an English character actor of the early Hollywood cinema, also a film director and producer, and a playwright and novelist. He was sometimes credited as Luther Miles. Early life Miles Mander was the second son of Theodore Mander, builder of Wightwick Manor, of the prominent Mander family, industrialists and public servants of Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England. He was the younger brother of Geoffrey Mander, the Liberal Member of Parliament. He was educated at Harrow School, Middlesex (The Grove House 1901- Easter 1903), Loretto School (in Canada) and McGill University in Montreal. He soon broke away from the predictable mould of business and philanthropy. ''The Morals of Marcus'' (1915) is a lost American silent comedy-drama film produced by the Famous Players Film Company and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It is based on a 1905 novel by William John Locke, '' The Morals of Marcus Ordeyne'', which was later produced on Broadway in 1907. The star of the play was Marie Doro who makes her motion picture debut in this film version. Both Edwin S. Porter and Hugh Ford take part in the direction of the film. The story was remade in 1921 as ''Morals'' with May McAvoy and in 1935 as '' The Morals of Marcus'' with Lupe Vélez. Frank Atkinson (19 March 1893 in Blackpool, Lancashire – 23 February 1963 in Pinner, Middlesex) was an English actor and writer. He appeared in at least 130 films between 1930 and 1963. A stalwart of British films, often in small or uncredited roles, and also in Hollywood in the 1930s, notably in the Raoul Walsh directed ''Me and My Gal'' and ''Sailor's Luck''. Allmovie described him as "tall and slender, and with gaunt facial features that lent themselves to looks of eccentricity, and with a highly cultured speaking voice, he could melt unobtrusively into a scene, as an anonymous bit-player, or could, with the utterance of a few words or a look, transform himself into a wryly comedic presence -- he played everything from jailers, guards, garage attendants, and soldiers to upper class twits."
