''The Merry Widower'' (german: Der lustige Witwer) is a 1929 German comedy film directed by Robert Land and starring Harry Liedtke, La Jana, Alice Roberts.Bock & Bergfelder p. 392 The film's sets were designed by Robert Neppach. It is not to be confused with the 1908 show at the Pekin Theatre in Chicago starring Lottie Grady and Jerry Mills. Robert Land
Robert Land (1887–1940) was an Austrian-Jewish film director of Moravian descent. Biography Born as Robert Liebmann to a German-speaking Jewish Family in Kroměříž. Land moved to Vienna to study German literature and art history. He started directing movies in 1919. He chose the pseudonym Robert Land in order to avoid being mistaken with film critic and screenwriter Robert Liebmann (1890-1942). He made movies in Austria and Germany until 1933, when he fled to Czechoslovakia after Nazis' rise to power. Unable to find work he went to Italy in 1934, before returning to Prague a year later. He directed three movies in Czechoslovakia – ''Jana'' (1935), ''Arme kleine Inge (1936) and '' The Doll'' (1938). In 1938 he moved to Paris, where he died on 12 October 1940. He's buried at Cimetière parisien de Thiais. Marcel Vibert (2 November 1883 – 11 June 1959) was a French film actor. Vibert worked primarily in the French film industry, but in the late 1920s he also appeared in several British silent films including ''Moulin Rouge'' and ''Champagne''. Hanna Waag (1904–1995) was a German film actress.Prawer p.213 Amongst her performances were playing Queen Victoria in the 1933 film ''Waltz War'' and the title role in ''Lady Windermere's Fan'' in 1935. Of Jewish heritage, in 1937 she went into exile from the Nazi regime in Germany. Her husband, the Jewish art director Rudolf Bamberger was killed at Auschwitz. Otto Wallburg
Otto Wallburg (21 February 1889 – 29 October 1944) was a German actor and Kabarett performer. He was a prolific film actor during the late silent and early sound era. Wallburg was born Otto Maximilian Wasserzug in Berlin, the son of a Jewish banker. He drifted into stage acting, but served in the German Army during the First World War and was wounded on the Eastern Front after winning an Iron Cross. From 1926 onwards he worked in the large German film industry, including many productions made by UFA. When the Nazis came to power in 1933 he left Germany and moved to Austria where he continued to work in film. He later moved to France and then on to the Netherlands. He was arrested following the 1940 German invasion of the Netherlands. He was held for a while at Westerbork transit camp, and later moved to Auschwitz where he was killed.
