The Medium
''The Medium'' is a short (one-hour-long) two-act dramatic opera with words and music by Gian Carlo Menotti. Commissioned by the Alice M. Ditson Fund at Columbia University, its first performance was there on 8 May 1946. The opera's first professional production was presented on a double bill with Menotti's '' The Telephone'' at the Heckscher Theater, New York City, February 18–20, 1947 by the Ballet Society. The Broadway production took place on May 1, 1947, at the Ethel Barrymore Theater with the same cast. In 1951, Menotti directed, with the help of filmmaker Alexander Hammid, a film version made to resemble film noir, and starring Marie Powers as Madame Flora and Anna Maria Alberghetti as Monica. A live television production starring Marie Powers took place on 12 December 1948 on the TV series '' Studio One'' and on 14 February, 1959 on '' Omnibus'', starring Claramae Turner. Gian Carlo Menotti
Gian Carlo Menotti (, ; July 7, 1911 – February 1, 2007) was an Italian composer, librettist, director, and playwright who is primarily known for his output of 25 operas. Although he often referred to himself as an American composer, he kept his Italian citizenship. One of the most frequently performed opera composers of the 20th century, his most successful works were written in the 1940s and 1950s. Highly influenced by Giacomo Puccini and Modest Mussorgsky, Menotti further developed the verismo tradition of opera in the post-World War II era. Rejecting atonality and the aesthetic of the Second Viennese School, Menotti's music is characterized by expressive lyricism which carefully sets language to natural rhythms in ways that highlight textual meaning and underscore dramatic intent. One-act Operas
A one-act play is a play that has only one act, as distinct from plays that occur over several acts. One-act plays may consist of one or more scenes. The 20-40 minute play has emerged as a popular subgenre of the one-act play, especially in writing competitions. One act plays make up the overwhelming majority of Fringe Festival shows including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The origin of the one-act play may be traced to the very beginning of recorded Western drama: in ancient Greece, ''Cyclops'', a satyr play by Euripides, is an early example. The satyr play was a farcical short work that came after a trilogy of multi-act serious drama plays. Flavio Emilio Scogna
Flavio Emilio Scogna (born 16 August 1956 in Savona, Liguria) is an Italian composer and conductor. Biography After studying at the Conservatory of Genoa, Scogna subsequently went on to further his studies in composition and conducting, amongst others, with Franco Ferrara in Rome (1982/1983), with Franco Donatoni and Aldo Clementi at the University of Bologna. In 1984 he went on to specialize with Luciano Berio with whom he was to strike up a strong relationship based on friendship and professional respect. This was to have a decisive effect on his development as a conductor. In 1988, along with Berio, he carried out the transcription and elaboration of ''Wir bauen eine Stadt'' by Paul Hindemith, which was performed in the same year in the Konzerthaus in Wien.
