The Mark Of Gideon
"The Mark of Gideon" is the sixteenth episode of the third season of the American science fiction television series ''Star Trek''. Written by George F. Slavin and Stanley Adams and directed by Jud Taylor, it was first broadcast on January 17, 1969. In the episode, a race of aliens from an overpopulated planet abduct Captain Kirk to solve their problem. The episode was co-written by actor Stanley Adams who portrayed Cyrano Jones in the ''Star Trek'' episode " The Trouble with Tribbles". Plot The Federation starship ''Enterprise'' arrives at the planet Gideon to discuss diplomatic relations. The Gideons will permit only one representative, Captain Kirk, to set foot on their planet. Overpopulation or overabundance is a phenomenon in which a species' population becomes larger than the carrying capacity of its environment. This may be caused by increased birth rates, lowered mortality rates, reduced predation or large scale migration, leading to an overabundant species and other animals in the ecosystem competing for food, space, and resources. The animals in an overpopulated area may then be forced to migrate to areas not typically inhabited, or die off without access to necessary resources. Dr. Leonard H. McCoy, known as "Bones", is a character in the American science-fiction franchise ''Star Trek''.
