The Man Standing Next
''The Man Standing Next'' () is a 2020 South Korean political drama film directed by Woo Min-ho. Based on an original novel of the same title, the film stars Lee Byung-hun, Lee Sung-min, Kwak Do-won, and Lee Hee-joon as the high ranking officials of the Korean government and the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) during the presidency of Park Chung-hee 40 days before his assassination in 1979. The film premiered in South Korea on 22 January 2020, where it topped the box office until 4 February 2020. It was released in the United States on 24 January 2020. It was selected as the South Korean entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. The film was released in Japan on 22 January 2021, under the name ''KCIA''. Woo Min-ho (born 1971) is a South Korean film director and screenwriter. Woo debuted with the revenge thriller ''Man of Vendetta'' (2010), followed by the action comedy thriller '' The Spies'' (2012), both starred Kim Myung-min in the lead. His latest political thriller ''Inside Men'' (2015), based on Yoon Tae-ho's webtoon ''The Insiders'' which focused on the corrupt systems existing in Korea, the film focused on the intense competition between the characters themselves. Kim Hyong-uk
Kim Hyong-uk (Hangul: 김형욱, Hanja: 金炯旭, January 16, 1925 – c. October 8, 1979) was a South Korean brigadier general who served as director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency. Born in Hwanghae province, he left for the South after high school and was a classmate of Kim Jong-pil at the Korea Military Academy, graduating in 1949 as members of the 8th graduating class. He was an infantry troop commander in the Korean War. He attended the United States Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1955. As colonel, he took part in the May 16 coup in 1961, when he led a group of soldiers to take Prime Minister John M. Chang into custody. He served for two years as Minister for Home Affairs in the junta and then was director of the KCIA from March 1963 to October 1969, where he was notorious for his brutality and corruption.
