The Major (film)
''The Major'' (russian: Майор, translit. Mayor) is a 2013 Russian crime drama film written and directed by Yuri Bykov, who also stars in the film. It was first screened as part of the International Critics' Week at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. It was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. The film tells of the staff of the Russian police who fall in difficult life situations, and the use of official position and procedures to get out of them. Plot Police Major Sergei Sobolev's wife is in labour. The future father rushes to the hospital, but his car hits, at full speed, a boy who is crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing, killing him. The only witness is the boy's mother, Irina Gutorova. The Major decides to avoid responsibility for the crime and calls his colleagues to the incident scene. He is best known for directing the films '' The Major'', '' The Fool'' and the TV series '' The Method''. Life and career Early years Yuri Bykov was born on August 15, 1981 in Novomichurinsk, Ryazan Oblast. First he lived with his parents in a trailer. Bykov's father was a chauffeur by profession, his mother worked at the Novomichurinsky plant of large-panel housing construction. Around 1987 his father left for Tyumen and he did not see him again. Russian police reform (russian: Закон о Полиции, ''Zakon o Politsii''; Law on Police) is a reform initiated by then President Dmitry Medvedev to improve the efficiency of Russia's police forces, decrease corruption and improve the public image of law enforcement among other goals. On 7 February 2011, amendments were made to laws on the police force, the criminal code and the criminal procedure code. The amendments came into force on 1 March 2011.
