The Mad Locomotive
''The Mad Locomotive'' is a 1922 short animated film and part of a series of films based on the comic strip ''Jerry on the Job'' by Walter Hoban. The film marks the final animated adaptation of the strip. Plot Mr. Givney's trains need coal to run but the station is out of supply. Because of this, Mr. Givney decides to collect coal from passengers. Moments later, three men who want to go to some park arrive at the train station. With the new rules in place, the three men offer coal as well as their fares. With the things collected, and the passengers on board, Mr. Givney and his employee Jerry set off in their train. After traveling several miles, the coaches are lost somehow, and only the locomotive is seen running on the rails. The locomotive starts to travel roughly until Jerry and Mr. Givney fall off. Walter Lantz
Walter Lantz (April 27, 1899 – March 22, 1994) was an American cartoonist, animator, producer and director best known for founding Walter Lantz Productions and creating Woody Woodpecker. Biography Early years and start in animation Lantz was born in New Rochelle, New York, to Italian immigrant parents Francesco Paolo Lantz (formerly Lanza) and Maria Jarvis (changed to Jarvis to avoid prejudice) from Calitri. According to Joe Adamson's biography ''The Walter Lantz Story'', Lantz's father was given his new surname by an immigration official who anglicized it. Walter Lantz was always interested in art, completing a mail-order drawing class at age 12. He was inspired when he saw Winsor McCay's animated short "Gertie the Dinosaur". While working as an auto mechanic, Lantz got his first break. ''Jerry on the Job'' was a comic strip by cartoonist Walter Hoban which was set in a railroad station. Syndicated by William Randolph Hearst's International Feature Service, it ran from 1913 into the 1930s. Origins When Hoban was given only a weekend to devise a comic strip, he created ''Jerry on the Job'', about pint-size Jerry Flannigan, initially employed as an office boy and then in a variety of other jobs. The strip was launched on December 29, 1913. Walter Hoban
Walter C. Hoban (1890 - November 22, 1939) was an American cartoonist best known for his comic strip ''Jerry on the Job''. Born in Philadelphia, Hoban came from a newspaper family. His brother Edwin was with ''The Philadelphia Inquirer'', and his father was the city editor and a political and editorial writer with the ''Public Ledger (Philadelphia), Philadelphia Public Ledger''. The young Hoban attended parochial schools and Saint Joseph's University, Saint Joseph's College, but he dropped out in 1907 to take a job at Philadelphia's ''North American'' newspaper, as he recalled, "There I made borders for pictures of the 'murdered man' et al. I drew the borders and the ads so carefully that they made me sporting cartoonist, and I was allowed to see the ball games free. This lasted until late in 1913 when the call of N.Y listened good. The Big Cartoon DataBase (or BCDB for short) is an online database of information about animated cartoons, animated feature films, animated television shows, and cartoon shorts. The BCDB project began in 1997 as a list of Disney animated features on creator Dave Koch's local computer. In response to increasing interest in the material, the database went online in 1998 as a searchable resource dedicated to compiling information about cartoons, including production details such as voice actors, producers, and directors, as well as plot summaries and user reviews of cartoons. In 2003, BCDB became a 501(c) non-profit corporation. On June 24, 2009, it was announced by creator Dave Koch on his BCDB forums that the site had 100,000 titles. Due to system issues that have been unable to be resolved, all cartoon information on the site is non-existent after 2019. Users are no longer able to contribute to the site due to the issue.
