The Lord Of The Rings (1955 Radio Series)
During 1955 and 1956, a condensed radio dramatisation of ''The Lord of the Rings'' was broadcast in twelve episodes on BBC Radio's the Third Programme. These radio broadcasts were the first dramatisation of ''The Lord of the Rings'', a book by J. R. R. Tolkien, the final volume of which, ''The Return of the King'', had been published in October 1955. Since the BBC did not generally keep long-term archives of its productions at that time, no copies of the full adaptation are known to have survived. A single clip from a 2016 radio special by BBC Sounds can be heard around the four-minute mark of the recording playing the opening theme of the series. Although virtually all audio of the series is lost, in 2022 Stuart Lee discovered the full script for the dramatization in the BBC archives, including annotations by Tolkien himself. Radio Drama
Radio drama (or audio drama, audio play, radio play, radio theatre, or audio theatre) is a dramatized, purely acoustic performance. With no visual component, radio drama depends on dialogue, music and sound effects to help the listener imagine the characters and story: "It is auditory in the physical dimension but equally powerful as a visual force in the psychological dimension." Radio drama includes plays specifically written for radio, docudrama, dramatized works of fiction, as well as plays originally written for the theatre, including musical theatre, and opera. Sauron
Sauron (pronounced ) is the title character and the primary antagonist, through the forging of the One Ring, of J. R. R. Tolkien's ''The Lord of the Rings'', where he rules the land of Mordor and has the ambition of ruling the whole of Middle-earth. In the same work, he is identified as the "Necromancer" of Tolkien's earlier novel ''The Hobbit''. ''The Silmarillion'' describes him as the chief lieutenant of the first Dark Lord, Morgoth. Frodo Baggins
Frodo Baggins is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's writings, and one of the protagonists in ''The Lord of the Rings''. Frodo is a hobbit of the Shire who inherits the One Ring from his cousin Bilbo Baggins, described familiarly as "uncle", and undertakes the quest to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom in Mordor. He is mentioned in Tolkien's posthumously published works, ''The Silmarillion'' and ''Unfinished Tales''. Derek Osborne Hart (18 March 1925 – 23 November 1986) was a British actor, journalist and radio presenter best known for his appearances on the BBC's current affairs programme of the 1950s and 1960s, ''Tonight''. Hart was born in Hertfordshire and educated in Bath, Somerset. As an interviewer, Hart's subjects included Lon Chaney Jr and John Wyndham. Gimli (Middle-earth)
Gimli is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, appearing as a member of the Fellowship of the Ring in ''The Lord of the Rings''. A dwarf warrior, he is the son of Glóin, a member of Thorin's company in Tolkien's earlier book ''The Hobbit''. He represents the race of Dwarves as part of the Fellowship of the Ring. As such, he is one of the primary characters in the story. In J. R. R. Tolkien's fictional world of Middle-earth, Mordor (pronounced ; from Sindarin ''Black Land'' and Quenya ''Land of Shadow'') is the realm and base of the evil Sauron.
