''The Long Trail'' is a 1917 American drama silent film directed by Howell Hansel and written by Eve Unsell. The film stars Lou Tellegen, Mary Fuller, Winifred Allen, Sidney Bracey, Franklin Woodruff and Ferdinand Tidmarsh. The film was released on July 23, 1917, by Paramount Pictures. Howell Hansel
Howell Hansel (1860 – 1917), was an American film director. He directed 26 films between 1913 and 1917. Biography Hansel was born in Indiana, and began his career as a stage actor on the East Coast. Eventually he gave up his acting career to join Thanhauser as a film director; he'd also direct films for Famous Players–Lasky. His output slowed toward the end of his life as he struggled with a prolonged illness. He died in Manhattan in 1917, leaving behind a wife and a daughter. The ''Moving Picture World'' was an influential early trade journal for the American film industry, from 1907 to 1927. An industry powerhouse at its height, ''Moving Picture World'' frequently reiterated its independence from the film studios. In 1911, the magazine bought out ''Views and Film Index''. Its reviews illustrate the standards and tastes of film in its infancy, and shed light on story content in those early days. By 1914, it had a reported circulation of approximately 15,000.
