The Living End (Hüsker Dü Album)
''The Living End'' is the final release by American punk rock band Hüsker Dü. A live album, it was recorded at various venues throughout October 1987, but not released until 1994 by the major label Warner Bros. It spans the band's entire recorded output, from "Data Control" off ''Land Speed Record'', the band's debut, to a number of songs from the band's last studio album, '' Warehouse: Songs and Stories''. There are also some unreleased tracks and a cover of the pioneering punk rock band Ramones' "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker." Recording and reception Guitarist Bob Mould and drummer Grant Hart handled the overwhelming share of songwriting duties in the band, though Greg Norton has a solo credit for "Everytime" . The track listing is reflective of the band's set lists. "New Day Rising" was a common choice to open shows. Hüsker Dü
Hüsker Dü () was an American punk rock band formed in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1979. The band's continual members were guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould, bassist/vocalist Greg Norton, and drummer/vocalist Grant Hart. They first gained notability as a hardcore punk band, and later crossed over into alternative rock. Mould and Hart were the band's principal songwriters, with Hart's higher-pitched vocals and Mould's baritone taking the lead in alternating songs. The band issued their debut studio album ''Everything Falls Apart'' on Reflex Records in 1983 and subsequently released three LPs and an EP on the independent label SST Records, including the critically acclaimed '' Zen Arcade'' in 1984. Grant Hart
Grantzberg Vernon Hart (March 18, 1961 – September 13, 2017) was an American musician, best known as the drummer and co-songwriter for the punk rock band Hüsker Dü. After the band's breakup in 1988, he released his first solo album ''Intolerance'' before forming the alternative rock trio Nova Mob, where he moved to vocals and guitar. His solo career became his main focus after the dissolution of Nova Mob in 1997. As the co-songwriter of Hüsker Dü, Hart's songs (such as "The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill" and " Turn on the News") received praise from critics and contemporaries. His vocal style, in contrast to that of Hüsker Dü bandmate Bob Mould, had a more measured and melodic delivery. Metal Circus
''Metal Circus'' is an EP by American punk rock band Hüsker Dü, released in 1983. As one of their early records, it was largely rooted in the band's initial hardcore punk style. However, signs of a new, poppier influence emerge on ''Metal Circus'', particularly in the songs sung by Grant Hart ("It's Not Funny Anymore" and "Diane"). It also features some of Bob Mould's most passionate singing and shows further development in his guitar playing. Harmonic, chorus-type effects applied to Mould's guitar are more prominent. The change from the furious hardcore moments of ''Land Speed Record'' and ''Everything Falls Apart'' towards increasing melodicism hints at the groundbreaking new approach that was to be seen on the band's next release, ''Zen Arcade''. ''Everything Falls Apart'' is the debut studio album by Hüsker Dü released in January 1983 by Reflex Records. Critical reception In a 1983 ''Trouser Press'' review, Jon Young said, "Yeah! Hyperspeed agression!...Buzzsaw guitars! Shouting! A disrespectful version of "Sunshine Superman"!...Not Bad!" Reissue The album was released on compact disc in 1993 as ''Everything Falls Apart and More'', with bonus tracks including the band's first two singles, the full version of "Statues" lasting over eight minutes, and an unreleased track recorded in a St. Paul, Minnesota, basement called "Do You Remember?" (the English translation of "husker du" from both Danish and Norwegian). "Could You Be the One?" is a song by Hüsker Dü from their '' Warehouse: Songs and Stories''. The song was released as a single and an EP, both in the United Kingdom. Allmusic wrote that the song is "Hüsker Dü at its melodic best ... the last real gasp from a band that was about to hit the wall." A video was filmed for the song, and it was the band's only video that had them performing on a sound stage as opposed to featuring live clips of them playing. "Could You Be the One?" was performed with "She's A Woman (And Now He Is a Man)" during the band's appearance on ''The Late Show'' with Joan Rivers. New Day Rising
''New Day Rising'' is the third studio album by American punk rock band Hüsker Dü, released in 1985 on SST Records. The album continued the move away from the fast hardcore punk of the band's earliest releases toward slower, more melodic material. Production and release The band released the album ''Zen Arcade'' through SST Records in July 1984, and the label's co-owner Joe Carducci immediately requested another album. The band wanted to self-produce, but SST insisted on Spot, who produced many of the label's albums, including all of Hüsker Dü's. The recording atmosphere was thus tense. ''New Day Rising'' appeared in January 1985 and featured slower, more melodic material, continuing the trend away from the fast hardcore punk of the band's earliest releases. Lou Giordano
Lou Giordano (born c. 1957) is a record producer and recording engineer who co-founded Radiobeat Studios. He worked at Fort Apache Studios when it was located in Boston, and was a partner in the production company Prodco, which had close ties with Fort Apache. Giordano received a degree in electrical engineering from MIT. He was a sound man for Hüsker Dü through 1988, and later produced Bob Mould's spin off Sugar. Giordano also built effects pedals for Mission of Burma. He has produced a wide variety of bands, including Sunny Day Real Estate and the Goo Goo Dolls.
