''The Light of Western Stars'' is a 1940 American Western film directed by Lesley Selander, starring Victor Jory as Gene Stewart, and based upon a 1914 novel by Zane Grey. The film is also known as ''Border Renegade'' (American alternative title). The supporting cast features Jo Ann Sayers, Russell Hayden, Morris Ankrum, Noah Beery Jr. as Jory's character's Mexican sidekick, Tom Tyler and Alan Ladd (two years out from superstardom in a supporting role as a ranch hand named "Danny"; his part in this film is much larger than his billing would indicate). That same year, another Zane Grey novel titled '' Knights of the Range'' was produced at the same studio with the same screenwriter, director, and much the same cast, albeit without Beery or Ladd. Lesley Selander
Lesley Selander (May 26, 1900 – December 5, 1979) was an American film director of Western (genre), Westerns and adventure film, adventure movies. His career as director, spanning 127 feature films and dozens of TV episodes, lasted from 1936 to 1968. Before that, Selander was assistant director on films such as ''The Cat and the Fiddle (film), The Cat and the Fiddle'' (1934), ''A Night at the Opera (film), A Night at the Opera'' (1935), and Fritz Lang's ''Fury (1936 film), Fury'' (1936). To this day Selander remains one of the most prolific directors of feature Westerns in cinema history, having taken the helm for 107 Westerns between his first directorial feature in 1936 and 1967. Alan Ladd
Alan Walbridge Ladd (September 3, 1913 – January 29, 1964) was an American actor and film producer. Ladd found success in film in the 1940s and early 1950s, particularly in films noir and Westerns. He was often paired with Veronica Lake in films noir, such as ''This Gun for Hire'' (1942), ''The Glass Key'' (1942), and ''The Blue Dahlia'' (1946). ''Whispering Smith'' (1948) was his first Western and color film, and ''Shane'' (1953) was noted for its contributions to the genre. Ladd also appeared in ten films with William Bendix; both actors coincidentally died in 1964. His other notable credits include ''Two Years Before the Mast'' (1946) and ''The Great Gatsby'' (1949).
