The Legal Writing Institute
The Legal Writing Institute (LWI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving legal communication, building the discipline of legal writing, and improving the status of legal writing faculty across the United States. The Institute currently has almost 3,000 members; while the bulk of the members are law professors, some of the members are judges, attorneys, and undergraduate professors. History In 1984, professors Laurel Currie Oates and Chris Rideout used leftover money from an NEH grant to host a conference titled “Teaching Legal Writing.” Although at that time it was difficult to identify those who were teaching legal writing, 108 individuals from 56 different law school attended the conference. Laurel Currie Oates
Laurel Currie Oates is a legal author and law professor at Seattle University School of Law. Oates is also a visiting professor at the University of Witwatersrand School of Law in Johannesburg. She was a co-founder of the Legal Writing Institute, which now has more than 8,000 members; helped establish its newsletter known as ''The Second Draft''; and helped organize and host seven of its national conferences, including the 1984, 1986, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004 conferences. She is the co-author of five books, including ''The Legal Writing Handbook'', which is now in its sixth edition, and ''Just Research'', ''Just Memos'', ''Just Briefs'', and ''Just Writing''. The University of New Mexico School of Law (UNM Law or New Mexico Law) is the law school of the University of New Mexico, a public research university in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Willamette University College of Law is the law school of Willamette University. Located in Salem, Oregon, and founded in 1883, Willamette is the oldest law school in the Pacific Northwest. The University of Puget Sound (UPS or Puget Sound) is a private university in Tacoma, Washington. The university draws approximately 2,600 students from 44 states and 16 countries. History The University of Puget Sound was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888 in downtown Tacoma. The idea for a college in Tacoma originated with Charles Henry Fowler, who had previously been the president of Northwestern University. The term Listserv (styled by the registered trademark licensee, L-Soft International, Inc., as LISTSERV) has been used to refer to electronic mailing list software applications in general, but is more properly applied to a few early instances of such software, which allows a sender to send one email to a list, which then transparently sends it on to the addresses of the subscribers to the list.
