Willy Meyer
Willy Enrique Meyer Pleite (born 19 August 1952, in Madrid) is a Spanish politician and Member of the European Parliament with the Izquierda Unida (United Left). He is a member of the bureau of the European United Left–Nordic Green Left, and sits on the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries, Committee on Foreign Affairs, and the Committee on Petitions. He is a substitute for the Committee on Development. Meyer Pleite was born in Madrid. He is a member of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) since 1970. His name caught the attention of the media after the resignation of his sit as Member of the European Parliament due to the discovery of a controversial SICAV under the ownership of the communist parliamentary in 2014. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. The 2009 European Parliament election in Spain was held on Sunday, 7 June 2009, as part of the EU-wide election to elect the 7th European Parliament. All 50 seats allocated to Spain as per the Treaty of Nice—54 after the Treaty of Lisbon came into force on 1 December 2011—were up for election. United Left ( es, Izquierda Unida , IU) is a federative political movement in Spain that was first organized as a coalition in 1986, bringing together several left-wing political organizations, most notably the Communist Party of Spain. IU was founded as an electoral coalition of seven parties, but the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) is the only remaining integrated member of the IU at the national level. Despite that, IU brings together other regional parties, political organizations, and independents. It currently takes the form of a permanent federation of parties.
